Seems that the ptarmigan like this one rocky pass with a tarn in southwest Colorado. I see them every time I go there in summer. Also saw a hen with about four chicks. They sure had my GWP Rica's attention.

Yes there is a difference.

 

I don't know if you can hunt the white tailed ptarmigan in Colorado. I think they may be endangered. Not sure though

CO P&W shows white-tailed ptarmigan seasons starting Sept 12

They turn a nice white for winter.

Cool. So I was wrong.

Tres, your comment made me check on the season. If I am up there on CO in late September to photograph fall colors, I should take a day to look with Rica and the 28 ga

Red Rabbit, can I ask what part of Colo you are heading to in fall? I spent quite a few falls up there when I was younger. There are a couple spots in SW that always made me wish I had talent and a lense.
