Edge Report post Posted August 5, 2016 Get a buddy and do it yourself. 3 wires, 2 water lines and done.Plenty of guys here to walk you thru it. Unless it s gas. Same basic concept. Correct. I was a sub for Lowe's mainly doing backup generators in the hurricane belt but did a lot of hot water heaters when it was slow. When we did gas heaters, by law could only turn the gas off, never back on or lite pilots. A few homes have exploded when gas was interrupted, turned back on and a pilot lite was missed, ooops. If it's been that long between heaters, make certain the design and placement are still up to code. And don't be too cheap buy a new pressure relief valve. ready2hunt Report post Posted August 5, 2016 Get a buddy and do it yourself. 3 wires, 2 water lines and done.Plenty of guys here to walk you thru it. Unless it s gas. Same basic concept. just make sure you hook up a hose and let the air out of the tank before you run it! Just be gentle with your water connections when disconnecting and reconnecting them so they don't break and make sure you use some plumbers tape to seal them right. Its SUPER easy, if you dont feel confident just look up a "YOUTUBE" video on how to do it. You will literally save yourself $80-$100 in labor. If you get into trouble and no one can help THEN call a service guy. They would have likely had the same trouble and at least you'll learn something. Best thing my father ever taught me was if you HAVE to call a professional then pay them to walk YOU through how to do it instead of letting them do it all so you know how to do it in the future.

PRDATR Report post Posted August 5, 2016 I know in Mesa you need to pull a permit too. say what? I never did when I lived in Mesa. oops Neither did I but the ex said she they told her she needed to do so with the last one. Only time I ever pulled permits was when I did a electric service changeout on my house and then for a friend. Oh, and when I added an AC unit to the house after we moved in and the wife got pregnant with our first kid and I decided that just having a swamp cooler wasn't going to cut it anymore so I got a refurbished unit from a friend and had another one measure up the ductwork and we welded up a frame from some old angle iron and installed it after I changed out the 100amp fuse panel for a 200 amp breaker panel. I did all that work myself including the hot work. The city inspector did the initial inspection and a couple of years later SRP came around upgrading the feeders and biatched up a storm to the wife because I didn't call them. Yeah oops. Snapshot Report post Posted August 6, 2016 I have replaced many. Make sure the new water heater is similar in height & diameter, or you can have problems lining up the existing water lines, and pressure release valve line.

Great point since the first of the year our wonderful EPA has changed the regulations on all water heaters they are taller and bigger in diameter.

Great point since the first of the year our wonderful EPA has changed the regulations on all water heaters they are taller and bigger in diameter. I have replaced some where I had to cut the lines, and sweat new stubouts, and flex lines on.This issue is usually caused by tight spaces and larger water heaters, where the existing soldered on flex lines are not long enough to reach the inlet/outlet on the bigger water heater Same goes for the pressure valve line. And hope there is enough slack in the electrical line, if it is an electrical model.
5guyshunting Report post Posted August 6, 2016 This really isn't much more technical than replacing a washing machine. I have heard the permit crap for waterheaters, sprinklers, ac units , Etc. Just do it, google earth won't see your water heater.
