sherman Report post Posted August 3, 2016 We'll earlier this year I decided to try and hunt 30 A, but the application deadline snuck up on me fast (family issues) and I decided I would just put in for 30 B. After seeing "not drawn" on the portal I wondered wth so I called g&f and she told me there was no ssn# on the application. Oh heck bonehead mistake #1 I just put my sportsman's id# oh well there was plenty of leftovers in my unit so I get another application in the mail wait til Wednesday and call and ask did you put it in the blue envelope Mr. Sherman yes ma'am I did....didn't you see the address on the page with all the leftover tags and hunt # oh heck bonehead mistake #2. At this point I was so mad but I came up with a plan and looked at the leftover tags and called a rancher I know in 30 A and asked if I could use the ranch as a access point to the forest land he runs cattle on. He said he would get back with me then on Thursday night he text me and says come out tomorrow. So I say OK and is there anything you need from town. Maybe a cold beer he says so Friday I get some beer and go south. I help him do some stuff for a few hours and we talk about this and that we have been friends for around 18 years and I say so is it OK to get access. Well I guess that will be alright now I have to get the tag. Yesterday morning I got one of the few tags left hunting the unit I wanted to from the start strange how things turn out. My father always took me along with him when he would do things for ranchers and would call it politicin it could be fixing fence, raking 15 acres of Mesquite beans in their horse pasture, or just seeing how they where doing. I get the feeling no one does this much anymore. Well I am pumped and ready I will up date as I can
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted August 3, 2016 Congrats man, have a great hunt and more than that enjoy the freindship you have. I've always felt ranchers don't want to be bothered, weather it's nasty signs or dead cattle heads on posts I just never got a welcoming feeling around private property. I just go my way and let them alone, too bad cuz I would make a good friend, and I need the occasional hard day of someone else's work to clear the head and soul.
sherman Report post Posted August 3, 2016 I am glad it have never came across that kind of rancher. Maybe both sides have changed. The o es I know I always bother them with dead cows, water leaks, or the cows are out.
TonyC Report post Posted August 3, 2016 I have met a few; they definitely seem to be "offguard" or on the irritable edge before you even meet them.. haha However, normally after a light conversation and a joke to break the ice, they turn into good quality people that most hard working men and women are.

sherman Report post Posted August 3, 2016 He is a good friend but I think he would still kick me off the place if I did that. What I would do is find out some ranchers and give them a call sometimes they just want to know who is on there land. Sherman you wouldn't mind dropping me off on your way up the mountain would ya?
