CouesPursuit Report post Posted August 2, 2016 As I'm prepping and reloading ~100 once fired cases in my new 223 Savage Axis HB, I've noticed small but very consistent denting about 1/4" below the shoulder on the majority of the brass. This seems to be from extraction and is apparent before resizing ( just neck-sizing anyway). The chamber looks smooth and clean of any debris. I understand these aren't an issue as far as pressure or accuracy, but what about case life? I noticed this buildup, thoughts? Not sure sure if it is coming from chambering FMJs or case extraction. Thank you.
wish2hunt Report post Posted August 2, 2016 Looks like from new case being chambered.
Viper Report post Posted August 2, 2016 I get this with my AR15 too. Maybe something common with .223/5.56?
GreyFox Report post Posted August 2, 2016 Common, try cycling a loaded round but don't shoot it, see if there's indication of denting. Feed ramp looks like it could be polished out slightly OR the spring in the mag isn't raising the nose enough. Any feeding issues? On an AR, typically the cases are dented during extraction because spring pressure forces the brass (HOT) in the the side of the locking lugs. Sometime a lighter extraction spring will correct that but not always. Definitely not something to do yourself, take it to a 'smith.
CouesPursuit Report post Posted August 3, 2016 Numbskull over here, it's the Hornady FMJs themselves, I checked last night but obviously not well enough. They are also a touch long rubbing on the ramp, luckily I won't need to shoot them anymore. Thanks for the replies and hopefully Viper got something out of it!
