metau Report post Posted July 19, 2016 Appreciate your service brother. Never been after deer specifically in 6A, but as a general rule for all units, I'd start with the areas listed on the G&F website for each unit. I've found that the info is fairly accurate, although sometimes can be a few years out of date. As for general advice, get the best binos you can afford and then put them on a steady tripod. You'll see 500% more deer then before, if not more. Even crappy binos on a tripod will increase the number of deer you see. In August, find water and you'll find deer.

BigGameJames Report post Posted July 20, 2016 metau, 6a because its somewhat just far enough away to make an early morning drive to go up for a day if need be. just looking to get into the sticks and learn how to archery hunt because i am really new to this and heard its very addicting. if you have any other advice on another unit, ill take your advice for it and look into that one. goinhuntn Report post Posted July 21, 2016 No need to explain why you chose 6a!! its a good unit for both deer & elk!! I've seen some nice bucks in that unit. They may not be 200" bruisers, but there are some respectable deer in there for sure. There are nice bucks in every unit of the state, just some units have more big deer than others.

metau Report post Posted July 21, 2016 My question regarding unit 6A had more to do with you being from CA, assuming the location in your profile is correct. Planning on hunting in August or December(if it's open)?

mattys281 Report post Posted July 21, 2016 Good luck on your first archery season. Dont be picky, just keep things simple and get that first one under your belt. Spikes and forkies taste better anyway. Have fun!
