Lance, here's my very first group from the gun. The 180 Hybrid at a VERY leisurely 3106 fps. Not even a hint of pressure. Very optimistic after this.

 

 

This is the first group with the 175 ELD-X at about the same speed.

 

 

Super pleased with the preliminary load development with the rifle.

Savage 116 300WSM 168 grain bergers for me.

Hoping to be using the artist formerly known as 30/06. When it becomes a 6.5-06AI. I'll have around 3 months or so to get it figured out but if not I have my 243 that loves me.

I finally drew my first Coues tag this year and am stoked. But after getting permission from the wife haha. Am buying a Remington model 700 in 7 mag and I'll be getting either the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 or the Viper 6.5-20x44 PA with a custom hunter turret from http://kentonindustries.com/custom-turrets/vortex. I'll be using Barnes Bullets match grade ammo in 150 or 160 grain bullet. Being that it's my first whitetail tag ever am going all out for this hunt. I plan on holding out for a buck in the high 80s to bigger.

If I receive a left over deer tag I'll use the TRG-42 in .338 Lapua, 3.5-18X (300gr Berger @ 2,722 fps or 285gr A-max @ 2,885 fps) if hunting an area of high ridge tops but if we decide to hunt the deep brush filled valleys I'll use the Montana AVR in .416 Rem Ultra Mag, 1-5X (340gr MTH CEB @ 3,010 fps or 400gr Partition @ 2,606 fps). Still awaiting my .338 Win Mag Savage barrel and the new Hawkeye 7mm Rem Mag is not dialed in yet because of several long trips.

Yes, but just about no meat loss on deer. I once lost about 1/4 to 1/3 of the best meat on a deer after using my friend's 7mm Mag. I don't ever want to do that again, a shame. The .338 Lapua and .416 RUM have not ruined any meat on animals I've shot.

Try a small caliber with a Barnes ttsx or tsx at high velocity and get back to me.

100 ttsx, 257wby started at 3510, 400 yards. Through bone, very little meat lost, if any.

Whatever the flavor of the month is...they're all adequate and all precise. All get their legs stretched regularly.

 

Three 308 wins and one 280AI. Forgot to include the 6.5x284 in an A5.

Looks like a lot of Coues hunters are building 6.5 rifles. Can some one educate us on the benefits of this round?

 

High ballistic performance to recoil ratio. There's many good calibers out there and none are the end all be all of calibers but for coues, the 6.5 is near perfect.
