Draw Process

Recommended Posts

Just reading the draw process, and if I understand correctly, one could have the most bonus points of anyone applying and still possibly not get drawn because the "random number generator" could assign a low number. That means even the bonus pass is totally random?

Sort of. Stick with me cause this is kind of confusing to explain in text. The bonus pass assigns the first 20 tags of any hunt to the applicants for that hunt with the most bonus points. However, it is common for the group of applicants with the most bonus points to exceed the number of tags allotted for the bonus pass. In this case all applicants with the highest number of points would then be assigned random numbers and the bonus pass tags would be given to those with the lowest random numbers.

Here is an example: Let's say that a hunt has 10 tags. This means that 2 (20% of the total) are available via the bonus pass. Now let's assume that the highest number of bonus points possible is 12, and that 5 people have that number of tags. Those 5 people are assigned random numbers for the bonus pass, and the lowest 2 are then awarded tags the allocated tags for the bonus pass. The other 3 people move on to the 1-2 pass with everyone else and are assigned new random numbers for that pass.

I hope this helps, it's not an intuitive process by any means.

Thanks. This makes sense; I think I understand. So from your example: say only one person had 12 points, and 5 people had 11 points. Those 6 people are assigned random numbers, and the lowest 2 are then awarded tags the allocated tags for the bonus pass. So it is possible the person with the most points won't get drawn?

Actually, the person with the 12 points would get a tag. The other 5 people with 11 points would get random numbers and the lowest of those numbers gets the other tag.

I see that now. Thanks.

So after the first pass, the second and third pass become pure chance? The only advantage to having more points is that a random number is generated for each point giving one a greater chance at getting a lower number? Kind of like being dealt a hand of cards: the more cards you're dealt, the more chances of getting a lower number?

Yes. And no. The bonus pass happens. Then the 1-2 (first and second choice) pass happens as you describe. The 3-4 (3rd and 4th choices) pass happens but in that pass everyone gets the same number of random numbers regardless of points. The 5 pass then happens the same way.

I'm pretty sure the part in bold print isn't correct. Random numbers for every pass are generated the same way -- for each bonus point and the application.

As per G&F:

"Third Pass (3rd, 4th, and 5th Hunt Choices)

  1. For all applications which were unsuccessful with their first and second choices, new random numbers are generated for each valid application with the lowest random number being assigned to the application. The same random number process as described above is used."

Thus, it's the same as both the bonus and 1-2 passes.

Could be right. I may have crossed that up with WY as I was doing it from memory without access to the website.

Flatlander, thanks for your help. I have better understanding of how the draw works now.

If you have more points than all the others outright, you get the tag regardless of the random number assigned during the bonus pass or any other pass. If there are more applications than tags remaining for the next highest number of bonus points the ones with the lowest random numbers get drawn. This process is different during the sheep and bison draws where all the tags for the genus are lumped together and 20% go to the ones with the highest points. This is different than all the other species where 20% of each hunt number is set aside during the bonus pass. The 3, 4, 5 choices are all looked at on the same pass.

People, go to the AZGFD web site and read How the Draw works. Information that you get on a chat site is 99% of the time not correct. Actually it doesn't matter how it works. You just put in for the hunts that you want to go on and wait. If you think that you have a better idea forget it. Hundreds have tried, and failed.

And you're completely clueless. Which is good. That helps my odds. Hopefully more people think like you.
