What feature would you like on your GPS.

Recommended Posts

I use my Garmin mainly for hunting and fishing, and when I log a waypoint I also try to remember to put it in a Log with specific information like time, date, weather and moon phase. What I would like is a GPS that when I make a waypoint it allows me to add meta data automatically to it (time, date, current temp, barometric pressure, and moon phase ) Not just a little comment ... I do not think there is anything out there that has a feature like this, but I think it would be a great addition to have.

what do you guys think, what additional features would you want on your GPS?

The manufactures should add a "ping" option. I bet it wouldn't be hard to add that technology.

You know how many lost or injured people they would find before they succumbed to the weather or injuries. Also, if you lost it, you could log onto their website and "ping" it and get the exact coordinates of your lost gps.

I imagine that would increase cost and lower battery life, but its something I've always thought about.

Our group uses Rinos so we can send texts from unit to unit. We can also poll a location(basically a ping) so as Forlorn suggested, it does not seem like having a ping feature would be too difficult and be very beneficial.

Bigger screens are always a given!

Bigger screen, just like cell phones = easier broken screen. I like my 60csx just fine, and I bet I use it 25x more then most use theirs.

I've never used one. The wife seems dead set on buying me one all of a sudden and she is looking at the Garmin Montana. Any thoughts? Seems like way more than I need...

Garmin Rhino 650's are pretty cool.

Poon, it gets a little boring out there some times, also with a bigger screen.

Woody on many of the Garmin Units you can upload images ... So you could always import some Horn Porn to look at while you pass the time, but it may get depressing if you are not finding any real racks that measure up !

Haha, beat me to it, creep.

Until the newer models are $20, I'll keep carrying my Etrex for emergencies. How many more times will I have to buff the screen to make the dinky numbers out?

But to answer the OPs question, a user friendly manual, step by step. I can't tell you how many people I've gone bushwhacking with whom hadn't a clue how to use their device. Stormy weather, no clue where the trail is and darkness setting is no time to try and figure your GPS out.

The Rhino's do all for me. Just think if the Granite Mountain Hotshots had Rhino's. The Forest Service claims the technology for remote location is still not available. Go figure as I purchased my first Rhino 110 years ago and they both still work. Up to a 520cx now and will not hesitate to go to a 650 if the 520 ever dies.
