Burro Mountains in unit 23

Recommended Posts

I have pulled a unit 23 Burro mountain hunt unit tag for Jan '08. I have never hunted cous deer or unit 23. I am just looking for any info anyone could give to help me out hunting in this unit.

Thanks alot,

Rick

With all do respect, the best advice I think someone can give you is to spend a few days there, do some hiking and sit behind the glasses the same way most of us do to learn an area. We have all pulled tags in areas we're unfamiliar with and if it was important to me I would dedicate a couple of weekends to learning it. Good luck!

I agree with what hunt4horns said earlier. This tag is THE tag for coues deer in NM and people have put in for that hunt for years and never drawn it so you will understand if people are not real upfront with areas/tactics. There are coues all over the hunt area from trees to open flats. Pick an area that suits your style of hunting, i.e. treestand or spot and stalk, and do some scouting. Again, there are coues deer in most all areas of that part of the unit, it will be just a matter of being out there to see them.

Rick 3,..... Where do you live? I drew the November Rifle Coues hunt for the Burros. I have put about 200 miles on my pick up (and I LIVE in Silver City!) and about 25-30 miles on foot since I found out I drew the tag. I have picked up several sheds and seen some nice bucks (before the rains started). I can tell you this, it ain't going to be a sure thing. There is alot of country out there with LOTS of little canyons for deer to hide. Scouting will be the most important thing that you can do if you want a nice deer. Don't think that just because it's the Burro's you will be able to drive out, park your truck and kill a 90 incher before noon. I don't think I'll ever draw this tag again, so I'd be willing to share some info with you after my hunt, IF I knew you put in some scouting time on your own. Good Luck, and congratsd on the tag>>>Jason

you need to PM Tommy (crazyaboutcoues) He has a service where he will scout the area for you, get you maps etc. He is a good guy and will take good care of you in the burros. That is what I would do with limited time and means etc. His price is great considering your return on investment. AG
