Cedar Fire update

Posted on June 20, 2016 by Kym Ofarrell

Official Fire update *****6/20/16 at 9:45 am******

Yesterdays weather did in fact break records across Arizona including the local area, with extreme heat and low humidity which resulted in extreme fire behavior.

The fire grew approximately 14,000 acres yesterday, with all growth extending from the south side of the main fire. The current perimeter of the fire extends directly south and east of Highway60 across the Gila County/Navajo County boundary.

The eastern edge of the fire has crossed over the Cedar Creek drainage. The southern perimeter is still approximately 1 ½ miles east of Hwy 73, and approximately 2 ½ miles north of the Cedar Creek community and has reached an area with more sparse vegetation.

The Community of Cedar Creek is under a PRE-EVACUATION notice. . Community members that choose to leave the area now can go to either Snowflake High School or to the Eager Round Valley Dome. Livestock can be taken to the Taylor Rodeo Grounds or Holbrook Fair Grounds and small animals can be taken to Apache Eager Animal Control.

Early this morning, the winds did shift and are now coming from the south. The wind will limit future fire growth to the south. Firefighters were able to prepare and conduct burnout operations along the eastern flank of the fire near Faught Saddle, tying in a critical piece of the northeastern flank of the fire with completed line.

Fire crews will continue to work south along Hwy 60 to fortify the control points. In coordination with Navopache Electric, fire crews are looking for opportunities to conduct burnout operations along the highway. When they are able to conduct these operations, the electric cooperative may need to turn off the power line for a short time to provide for the safest possible environment for firefighters. Navopache Electric Cooperative will notify affected residents prior to turning off power. On the eastern flank, fire crews will be scouting opportunities to tie in the road system to existing control features related to the 2015 Playground Fire.

With the recent growth of this fire the Incident Management Team has ordered additional resources to support continued suppression efforts. As of this morning, resources include 23 Fire Crews, 37 Engines, 7 Dozers, 11 Water Tenders, 7 Helicopters, 4 Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) for a total of 770 personnel assigned to the incident.

Ok Sherlock. They announced it was caused by lightning, and thus far that is still listed as the cause. Now, because some of us believe that, we get belittled? Why don't you enlighten us all with "the truth" Woody?. Out of character for you to post on here during the day and sober, isn't it? The point is, there is a big fire that is putting a lot of people, animals and land in danger, let's not detract from that point

You get a little huffy when someone questions your intelligence, you started the name calling, very mature. Spoken like a true drunk.

Woody, you should re-read all of your posts and never question anyone's intelligence other than your own. I would have a better chance deciphering egyptian hieroglyphs than most of your paragraphs. Looks like unfortunately my "source" was right though eh? Gotta hope for rain and no wind or this one is gonna burn out at the wallow fire line

Ya spell check sucks, I'm am very stupid , I am just playing and suck at spelling but definitely not a drunk . sometime I wish I was, well any way we agree on the animals, people, and land should not suffer for either lightening or man caused. Maybe we should have a coke and a smile together sometime, my apologies don't usually get worked up.

Apology accepted Woody. Coke is on me. Who gives a $hit whether mother nature, man, woman or beast started the fire? It's a bad deal for everyone.

Update on the fire as of 1930

The Cedar Fire is over 40,000 acres. Governer Duecy has declared a state of emergency for Navajo County.

Fort Apache Agency is working two lightning fires. Pacheta Fire is located just south of Reservation Lake in the eastern portion of the reservation. The fire is 1/2 acre. The Poker Fire is located 20 miles southeast of Whiteriver just west of Poker Mountain within Mormon Canyon. The fire is 70 acres and fire behavior was active. The fire is burning in Pinyon pine and Juniper. 8 Jumpers and a helicopter are working the fire.

Two engines are responding to a third start within Cerro Gordo Mountain east of McNary. No size up has been given as of 7 pm.

Fire danger is very high on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Therefore, Effective, Friday June 24, 2016 at 7:00 AM, Modified Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will be in effect for the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This means that campfires will NOT be allowed during the hours of 7AM to 7PM. In addition, debris burning will not be allowed. For more information, call (928) 205-5662. Thank you.
