knothead Report post Posted June 14, 2016 Thank you. I would gladly trade my 8 weeks off in the summer for 2 weeks in September. Teaching is not a hunter friendly occupation.
GreyFox Report post Posted June 14, 2016 Yeah Knothead, that's why I go to Africa or South America to hunt in the summer - it's winter there! NZ is just out of my price ability now, BUT, I am taking a week in November (assuming I draw the tag...) for a deer hunt in Arizona. I've got LOTS of sick time and we get Veteran's Day off..... kidso Report post Posted June 14, 2016 I have three months of sick leave built up from 18 years of service. But, all teachers know that for every say you are gone, it takes two or three days of "damage control" to get your students caught up in their academics and back in synch with your classroom procedures and personal expectations.

Glad to see nothing has changed since I have been out of high school. Always had to give the sub a hard time.
Phil Beavers Report post Posted June 14, 2016 I feel bad for teachers that have to deal with horrible parents. I have a 14 year old and some of those parents are out of control.

Sam Report post Posted June 15, 2016 Teaching is tough work, most people have no idea. I only lasted 5 years in the classroom. I spent more time setting up labs and grading lab reports every week than I ever imagined. I even graded papers around a camp fire more than once. As a counselor, the last 17 years has been a little easier. Especially when I take time off for hunting - no sub plans needed! College recs are all due in the fall, so it takes some planning. Missing a deadline is not good for the student. Summers are nice and calm - no letters of rec to write, no CPS reports to file, no disputes to settle between kids, parents or teachers, no hopeless stories to listen to about a kids' horrible home life and no bells going off every 54 minutes! Keith - I can relate to the sick leave saved up - I have 224 days! I work alot of summer days for comp days and have used these the last few years.
Jimmer Negamanee Report post Posted June 15, 2016 My spouse is a teacher and I routinely see her heading off to work with reams of paper, writing utensils, Kleenex and paper towels. She even raids my Clif Bar stash for hungry students. I tell her she works in the only profession where you steal office supplies from home and take them to work. For people who see only the summer break, I'll tell you there are many weekends and evenings spent outside the classroom grading, prepping or otherwise trying make everything run smoothly. To our educators I say: Thank you for your service. Here are a few of my favorite Thomas Jefferson quotes on education: "The tax which will be paid for [the] purpose [of education] is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance." --Thomas Jefferson to George Wythe, 1786. "If the condition of man is to be progressively ameliorated, as we fondly hope and believe, education is to be the chief instrument in effecting it." --Thomas Jefferson to M. A. Jullien, 1818. "It becomes expedient for promoting the public happiness that those persons, whom nature has endowed with genius and virtue, should be rendered by liberal education worthy to receive, and able to guard the sacred deposit of the rights and liberties of their fellow citizens; and that they should be called to that charge without regard to wealth, birth or other accidental condition or circumstance." --Thomas Jefferson: Diffusion of Knowledge Bill, 1779.
