Becker Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Accuracy is the key. Shoot what you like. Make sure your bullet is still able to perform with the velocity and KE at the ranges you are thinking. Like Casey mentioned. Build to the bullet and performance. I shoot a 338 edge. 300 grn sierras and bergers. 2800 FPS average. Little overkill but man it destroys those hybrids I'm always shooting 😜 Gun is a little heavy but I built it pretty light weight. I prefer a heavy gun anyway.
Splatt Report post Posted June 11, 2016 I have a custom 338 RUM. There's plenty of barrel to punch it to edge. I do like that 6.5 WSM. What bullet, at what speed ?
AlexB Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Mine would be a rem 700 action in a mcmillan stock with a proof research barrel in either 6.5 creedmor , 260 ackley improved or 6.5x284. I'd try to keep it light but also something that can reach out and touch something.
Allforelk Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Shared a tinker project with the old man and built a 6.5x284. Built on a no.1 that was a 25-06. Douglas Supreme 26" and throated for 140 gr. Accubonds. Timney trigger. Shoots ragged holes @100. Doesn't change M.O.A much @300. Haven't stretched the legs much. Work was done at Lawson's shop.

Chimichanga Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Well since my 300 win mag shooting 215 grain berger hybrids is off a savage action I'll have to pick the rifle I just recently had finished up. A 6.5 SAUM built off a 700 action. Loaded up some 143 grain hornady eld-x the other day and I'm dying to take it out to the range.

Splatt Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Here's my 7 mag. Just lubed them up real well, and ran them through a 257 weatherby f/l die.
Chimichanga Report post Posted June 11, 2016 Well the 300 win mag was built by Clint Neff, known on here as Stomp. It's built off a savage action. Mcgowen barrel, boyds stock cerakoted by Stomp. I topped it with a Leupold Mark4 6.5-20x50. It has knocked down everything it's been aimed at, so far... Bull Elk at 860, 550, and 200. Coues at 820, 400, 450, 300, and 100. A bear at 200. Mule Deer at 300 and 720. My newly acquired 6.5 SAUM is built off an old 30-06 in Remington 700. Western Precision added a fluted bartlein barrel, a Bell&Carlson Alaskan Ti lightweight stock, and a Seiko extractor. I went with a Burris XTR-II 5-25x50 scope and Seekins Precion rings. For brass I'm using Norma 7mm SAUM. It's quite simple to convert, just run it through the Whidden 6.5 RSAUM resizing die. Hodgdon H100 is my powder of choice, which seems to be the norm for this caliber. The gun itself is pretty light weight and well balanced but the Burris, tipping the scale at just over 2 pounds adds a bit of extra weight.
