Do you really need a truck to hunt...

Recommended Posts

Helped my buddy kill this desert buck in January... Took my commuter 02 Honda Civic... My partners wife with her 103" buck last October in their Ford Focus, and my 107 non typical in December 2014 in my brother in laws Honda Accord. Much can be had for some turd commuter cars. No truck needed. Just ask yourself how good your boots are.

Depends on what type of hunting you are doing. I have a 91 S-10 2WD that is my hunting vehicle. Before that they were 2WD Nissans, 85 and 87 and before that it was an 83 S-10 Blazer 4x4. I loved the Blazer as I could go about anywhere in it in 2WD that my buddies had to put their trucks in 4X4 due to the weight on the rear wheels. Now if I have to seriously use 4X4 I just take my 78 CJ-5 that I drove in high school.

Ive hauled a couple critters home in the trunk of an old Nissan altima. Theres plenty of good country right along the side of highways and most people just drive on by it.

I can remember a trip with my dad when I was like15- we had a 61 tbird -- we went from cave creek up thru seven springs to tango creek and out to the I-17

After trashing a couple of 35k dollar 4x4's. I wanted to resist temptation and got a 2 wheel drive truck. My success rate for taking animals has not suffered. I am cheating a bit though, I have a cj5 with a v8 that will go anywhere

I used to romp a Nissan Sentra. I'd either park right off of good roads where most people miss or park at trailheads and hike in. I have more access now with a 4 wd truck and atv, but I don't think it effects my success too much. It just changes how I hunt.

As most have said, it depends on where you go. I took a whitetail home in the trunk of a Nissan Sentra. I also took a cow elk out of Unit 9 in the back of a Dodge Grand Caravan. A 4x4 allows access to roads that I didn't take the mini van on, but you can hunt most areas with any vehicle and good boots.

I also don't think my jeep really effects my success rate, but it sure did help me get fatter.

After owning it the last 7 years, I just can't believe some of the places I used to walk to!

I have been blessed to have all the toys and still prefer to park at a trail head and walk in a mile or so it seams that no one will walk that short distance back.

The side by side is nice to cover ground from camp to hunt quickly and will go anywhere

I will NEVER buy a 2wd vehicle in my life. I drove my dad's 2wd f150 in high school on countless hunts and got it stuck too many times to count. It's not just a pain in the a$$, it can be life or death if you're by yourself in a bad situation far from help. As far as having a truck, jeeps are better off roading rigs but you have way less room for gear and stuff for long hunts and you make a mess throwing game/meat in the back. Also, it's a lot easier to get laid in the bed of a pick up ;) here are some picks from when I got my dad's truck stuck and had to load boulders in the back to get traction

it was stuck because it was a gutless ford though, not because it was 2wd.
