braid

Recommended Posts

ok you salty sonsob's what happens to guides with extreme braided line?

fishing 100# braid for 50-100lb grouper in the sea of cortez midriff-not tuna or billfish. no speed involved.

what does it do to standard guides? roller guides? any input would be welcomed as i have had zero experience with braid and fish.

will it cut through ss guides ?

roller guides ?

worried about keeping fingers it is so small of diameter.

I used it a lot (Power Pro) on my Calcutta with conventional guides on both Ugly Sticks and a St Croix without any issues so I doubt it will be an issue with metal guides.

Now I'm back to PLINE Flouroclear.

Saltwater or freshwater?

I don't have too much experience with saltwater. But freshwater, I fish braid with fluorocarbon leaders on all of my rods except for my frog rod (straight 65# PP) and topwater rod for small poppers (straight Sunline Super Natural Mono). Been doing that for about a decade and haven't had any problems with it notching or digging into any of the guides.

I use spectra on all my Sea of Cortez outfits and have had no problems. My heavier outfits I use 100 to 130 lb. braid with roller guides and the rest are standard guides of 65 to 40 lb. I find spectra so much better for bottom fishing as I can feel the bottom with that line. Also I believe the smaller diameter of line works better with the extreme tidal action. Only thing that has been marked up has been my thumb when a fish jumps on my bait with the drag not set.

thanks. its so tiny i can't hardly believe its not mis-labelled. 100 lb line the diameter of 6 lb mono. will give it a try.

100 lb braid should be about 25 lb mono equivalent .

100# braid matching 6# mono diameter doesn't sounds correct. Your rod guides should be OK but if you have conventional reel and plan on catching fish that will run like heck or making sure you wind back evenly on the retrieve you might pick up something like this for your finger. I use something similar when I cast and strip in saltwater with fly line.

I love having braid on my salty gear so I can saw off the rookies that tangle up when you have a fresh one. If you have a fish on just put it in freespool and pow, free again! If you have decent ceramic or stainless guides not sure that its an issue. Never has been for me. On cheaper plastic guides you might have an issue. Good Luck!

hes talking about groupers not tuna on a party boat though. free spool a 100lb grouper and he's in his hole and never coming back again.

Very true!

pretty wild in san diego i read that right now they were saying to bring straight 50lb mono because with the spectra braid the hooks are pulling on the big tuna when they get close to the boat with no stretch. i want to go over there, but san diego is in california.
