Edge Report post Posted May 28, 2016 How do you become a crack shot and accomplished hunter? For one boy growing up in an East Texas sharecroppers farm, it was a necessity. After a day of brutal farm chores were through there was still the need to put some meat on the table for the family. The boy would hold out his hand as his mother dropped the lone .22 cartridge into his, it was all the ammo the family could ration per day back in the height of the Depression. If the boy missed his quarry, he'd have to watch that night at the dinner table as his brothers, sisters and mother went to bed hungry, unnourished. In a short time that boy would grow up to become this nations highest decorated soldier. Forty five years ago today, he and several others died when the plane they were in crashed into a foggy Virginia mountain side. Hoss50 Report post Posted May 28, 2016 He was a heck of a man. I read his biography and learned alot about him when I was younger. You don't often see a guy be able to play himself in a movie about his time in ww2. We need more men like him in this world today more than even.

If I remember correctly, he lost his quarter horse ranch in Pima County, in a poker game. While dead broke he continued to refuse liquor and cigarette endorsements that would have paid him $100,000s, due to how his young fans like me might have been adversely affected.

mattys281 Report post Posted May 30, 2016 there are no childhood heroes anymore. Sad. You are your childrens' hero. Never forget it and always conduct yourself accordingly. I didn't have a dad when I was growing up, so my gradpa was my hero. I don't remember ever being hung up on an athlete or superhero, but papa was the biggest man alive. We didn't lose him in combat, old age took him. But he went to war for us.
