Unit 33 Youth hunt

Recommended Posts

Alright...don't flame me too bad I know it is my first post on here so I won't ask for any scouting reports...I am not a big fan of e-scouters either. I am headed down to this unit to scout out some likely spots for my sons youth hunt. He is 11 this year and we are going to find him one to shoot down there. From Phoenix, what is the best way to get there?? Is there anything that would be good to know as far as general information for this unit? ie...camping areas, private property, immigration issues. Also, anything anyone can tell me on the use of atv's would be a biog help too. As you can tell I am new to AZ and to hunting here. Just trying to figure it out a bit. I have read what AZ game and fish says about it but any local tidbits that they don't cover would certainly help. Any help is greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Spencer

Guest 300ultramag.

I wouldnt bring the ATVs, the deer are pretty close to the road.I glassed up 2 deer last year only to watch them runoff when a quad was coming up the trail almost a mile out.The terrain isnt bad enough to where u NEED an ATV u can get to the deer in a 4x4.GL

If you can get away from the roads.....on foot.... you will find less hunters and more deer, in that country. ;) That is a great tag! Congrats to your son and good luck!! :D

Thanks! He is pretty excited! getting him out this week to make sure he can reach out there a bit if needed. He is a pretty good shot so I think if we can find one we should be able to take one home. We deffinetly don't mind walking a bit to get away from the crowds. I am gald to hear this is a pretty good tag though.

Thanks again for all of the help!

Spencer, your son drew a great tag. there are literally a TON of places to hunt in 33. does he want a coues or a mule deer? that tag is good for either. I do not know much about mule deer in 33 but coues are pretty much everywhere. with that early hunt you will have first crack at them and they will be in spots they will not be in later on in Oct, Nov and Dec. you can take your quads. there are lots of nasty roads in 33 that you can get around on in a 4X4 but the going is a lot easier and faster in a quad. however, one does not have to wander to far from the main roads to glass up coues deer. check the g&f site for info on places to hunt. you will find deer in all of those spots and fortunately there will be a lot less hunters out in the unit during your sons hunt then there are in Oct and Nov. let us know how your scouting trips go. good luck. chris.

Thanks guys...this is exactly what I was hoping to learn. I will be trying to get down there a couple of times and it is good to know that I can use the quads to help get around to learn some of it. I imagine the 1st trip will be just a get to know the area type trip so I will be flying around on the quads to seek out some likely spots. I will give an update on what I see/find out in the next couple of weeks.

Again, Thanks to all those that have helped out!

Spencer

Depending on where you are looking is whether or not you should bring the quads or not. If you bring them you better make sure they are street legal or they might as well just stay at home. 33 is a great unit and I would do as much scouting as you can because where you find the deer now, is where they should be when your hunt starts. The juniors have the first crack at them. Check the game and fish website again and check those places out. I don't think it gets any better than those spots, unless someone wants to give up there GPS coordinates to there hot spots. Good Luck. Thanks for getting your son out there. Try to get him to introduce his friends in the sport. We need more youngsters out there for the future of the sport.
