Trphyhntr, I will give you a dedicated weekend if your guide can guarantee we don't have to walk more than 50 yds off the road for this "slay and flay" operation.

i've commented on this topic before in other threads.

i found a muley last year in a desert unit, with a trillion tags that i would shoot on opening day of a strip hunt if it took me 25 years to draw the tag. he's incredible, probably the biggest 4x4 i've ever seen. i don't know if somebody's killed him last year or not. i watched him all morning on my bro's whitetail hunt. i went after him in january, and another hunter i met had a pic of him on his phone that he took at 120 yards, the previous year, when he looked to be 180 ish, but this year he looked to me to be 200 and no trash either. but a whitetail tempted me and my arrow found his heart.

so, i'm buying bonus point number 8. i can't pull the string on a deer till next january, and while i have no regrets on the whitetail, it's a tough wait, knowing he could still be out there, and there's 3 seasons of deer hunting he has to survive between now and january, and i don't think he'll make it based on where i found him.

so, do i keep waiting for the strip tag, or, hunt a more familiar unit. every year i kill a deer with my bow, the decision is easy.

Hey Trphyhntr I bought a 2nd set of tires for my Subaru you can borrow it. It's all ready for this years road hunting adventures for you. Hopefully you draw that strip tag and you make a video titled "Road hunting the right way" on the Az strip. 😂

That buck has made it that long and gotten that big for a reason. I wouldn't be surprised if he did make it another season. Big bucks are smart animals.

Anything can happen on the strip. When I was doing some research up there I heard everything. One story was a guy who lived and ranched up there his whole life. When he finally got the tag he used horses and all means available to him (obviously holding out for a giant) and came home empty handed. I've also heard of several guys who stayed in town and did nothing but drive main roads ending up killing monster bucks. One buck I know of well over the 200 mark was being watched by a very well known guide up there for months before the season, only to cross over into the adjacent unit and get shot by a guy out taking "nature break" not 50 yards from his camper.

If there's any take-away, luck still plays a big role up there, as does weather and timing. I'd like to say the hardest working guys get the biggest deer, but like all hunting it's being in the right place at the right time, whether by hard work or luck or a combination of the two.

There's a great quote out there, that's actually more of a paraphrase as nobody seems to know its true origins - mostly attributed to Samuel Goldwyn. "The harder I work, the luckier I get". May or may not apply to hunting on the strip but there it is.
