Jazz Report post Posted May 16, 2016 So based upon the reg. that str8tshot put up its NOT illegal for scouting unless a G&f office deems it is. That being said- The drones I have seen are loud. How can you use these for scouting without scarring the game off? i have been 100's of yards away and have spooked them. No, I see your point. We've never been there before, and think this might open up some opportunities to get some great footage and a feel for whats out there. My son is really into this now (It's cool, I can't deny) and he's going to be brushing up on some aerial photography and video magic and what-not. As far as scouting, I might pop it over a volcano cone in the northern part and see what it looks like inside, or get a better view of something in the distance. I'm still pretty old fashioned about scouting, and I like to use the shoes over technology. Sure it'll be fun to take a few shots, but you don't know the area until you've walked it. To me, that's half the fun. What we won't be doing is intentionally harassing anyone or any wildlife. I doubt we would even put it in the air if I saw anyone remotely close. Drones freak people out- I totally get it and they probably don't want to deal with it. (Although, I will say this one is pretty quiet) I plan on getting up there next month and spending a few days on the roads and hills. My google maps are so marked up with 7E spots that you can barely see the map. =)
AZMThunter Report post Posted May 16, 2016 So, if you are in a unit that has mountain lion hunting - and lion is a big game species in AZ - and that hunt is a year-round hunt - does this mean you can't EVER fly a drone in that unit?
Str8Shot Report post Posted May 16, 2016 This is How it is Written C. Except in hunt units with Commission-ordered special seasons under R12-4-115 and R12-4-120 and hunt units with seasons only for mountain lion and no other concurrent big game season, an individual shall not locate or assist in locating wildlife from or with the aid of an aircraft in a hunt unit with an open big game season. This restriction begins 48 hours before the opening of a big game season in a hunt unit and extends until the close of the big game season for that hunt unit. That rule will last only until a non-hunter who can afford to hire a lawyer is taken to court for flying her drone over an elk herd and she tells her local nightly news reporter that she only wanted to video the magnificent animals in their natural state before hunters killed the last of them. Edge Report post Posted May 17, 2016 Ok, I admit it. I was a bit skeptical. My son had saved up and bought a Bebop 2 drone. I'm hooked. Below is a link to his first video- I can just think of the possibilities of the arial shots and the "I wonder whats up there" moments. It'll be fun scouting. Of course, it's illegal for hunting. I'm well aware and wouldn't break the rules. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YoLD6gkugg I think it's awesome your son saved up his own money for this. I can see a lot of possibilities for these like Search and Rescue and law enforcement. Good jobs for good pilots in the future. Maybe have him log his hours for reference down the road.
