Rifle Stock Painting

How well does it hold up? I used the "make it stone" paint with a bunch of clear coats on my 870. It had worked really well over the years of predator calling, bit got a little scuffed up held over my shouler rubbing on my pack while turkey hunting.

I have had one of mine done for about 4 years now, riding in trucks, packs, ahoulders on numerous hunts per year, and it is holding up pretty well. Another one for about a year and a half that rides around with me all over in case of coyotes, and has been on a few 10 day hunts riding in a pack and shouldered, and get taken out about 20-30 times a year to the range that still looks almost new. My AR goes with me to work all over the southwest, and the only real area of wear is the crown area, from riding around in my truck in an open case and bouncing around, and from the solvents during cleaning more than anything. And that doesn't even have the clear coats applied.

 

A lot depends on how you treat it. Drop it in the rocks or rub it on a buckle, and it is goi g to scratch of course. Heck, I even scratched some Cerakote off of a few guns by neglect.

Finished another stock tonight. About 8 hours into it.

 

Started out as an HS Precision Tan w. Black web, and had some green spray paint added about 6 years ago. I cleaned it thoroughly and got about 80% of the green off.

 

 

After 3 light coats of primer, I applied thw base colors of flat Khaki, Fossil, Dark Taupe, and a bit of Nutmeg.

 

Sanded it down with some 1500 grit and then masked the patterns.

Hit is with more alternating Khaki, Dark Taupe, Nutmeg, and some Warm Caramel.

Then masked off every other block and hit those with Dark Taupe, flat Brown, and Flat Mud.

Then stripped all thw masking and laid 3 coats of matte clear.

I also did a mock up for a member, just for reference. A little more of a blended pattern.

Depends on what I am stripping.

 

I have some stuff, for metal use only, that is like liquid fire when it gets on your skin, even a bit of splash or splatter burns like the Devil. But it takes paint off like no other. I have never tried it on plastic or fiberglass, as it might just turn everything into a puddle of goo. Klean Strip Premium Stripper.

 

For other stuff, Goof Off Graffiti Remover works well, or CitriStrip. Even mineral spirits works OK if you need to be very careful, like with plastics, but it takes forever and lot of elbow grease.

Home Depot carries the Klean Strip Premium. But seriously, be careful. It burns!

Klean strip works good, burns a little. Now aircraft stripper, destroys paints, and really really burns.

Just finished another stock today. 3 colors on the dark green, 3 colors on the light green, 3 colors on the brown, 3 colors on the tan.

Starting a new one today for a member here.

Started out as a brand new Bell & Carlson Medalist green w. black web for a Savage.

 

 

Prepped the stock, cleaned it real well, and hit it with 3 light coats of primer.

I hope to get the base colors down tonight depending on the primer drying completely and the wind tonight.
