Wow, I didnt realize the hunt opened this early......try to get back there, the rut eill only get better and that decoy will lure him in.

Not on Fain Ranch it won't... ;) ... Those are the most educated goats around. We have had good success spot & stalk and good success in blinds over there. We always hunt the "condos".... my huntin' buddy works the ranch so we usually have our pick.... The last hunt I was on over there, my boy had the tag and had hunted for about 5-7 days spot & stalk without scoring.... he came home all bumbed and hit me up to go back with him.... I had to think about it for oh... about.... 1/2 a second! heck Yeah!! We had to leave late that morning, cuz I had a meeting... got there about noon... had a buck on the ground before 3 pm.... B) It was a Frickin' hoot! That was my boy's second 19A buck. Too bad the Good 'Ol Days are gone.... It sure was the greatest place to hunt at one time!

I have hunted that country a bunch..... and Matthewp45.... I can only give you one piece of advice about archery goat hunting.... there is nothing wrong with completely missing..... it is when you barely miss your mark and have to chase a wounded goat that you reallize how important the phrase Aim Small, Miss Small is.... I've watched it happen many times over there, and was fortunate that it never happened to me..... I hope that you can have the same good fortune. Good Luck. ;)

Took me 6 years to finally successfully spot and stalk and actually hit and drop my first muley.Just keep flinging them and one is bound to connect.I agree with cns,and practice shooting from seated and kneeling positions

Mathew,

I was hunting there too. Those boogers are real tough, had some close calls, but no luck yet. I left last night to take a couple days off to recharge. I saw some good rutting behavior yesterday, watched a mature buck run a smaller buck off some does and make 2 scrapes. Did some spot and stalk, sat some travel routes but mostly sat a ground blind on a tank for 16HRS a day (6 straight days)

By the way, we found a resting place for two rattlers. Found one the day after I just belly crawled 400yds thru the same area and the other walking to the blind at 4:00am with headlamp. Both were easily irritated and ready to strike. Makes you a little nervous with all of the crawling I did.

Any how plan on going up a few more days next week. Good luck!

About 3 years ago on that hunt my hunting partner had a pair of Mojaves that were determined to get in the blind with him. At the same time he had a very good buck slowly coming into range. My buddy was actually flinging the snakes out of the back of the blind as the buck approached from the opposite side. In the end the buck changed his angle and wandered off totally unaware of the whole situation. As for the snakes... well it turned out not to be their lucky day.

Last time I had the tag, I chased a decent buck with an arrow sticking out of his neck for 3 days. Never got him.

You're right about the decoys on they Fain, they don't work.

I stay away from that place purely because of the chaos that usually takes place. Heard and seen way too many bad things about inconciderate hunters, biting bugs, rattlers and the heat......most of which you'll deal with anywhere though.

I was sitting on my truck on the side of the black top road where the old dirt Fain rd joined it, taking pic's of several bucks during the first archery hunt. There were three bucks, the first was small and about 40 yrds, the second was nice and about 60 yrds and the third was a toad at exactly 100 yrds. A hunter pulls up in front of our truck, jumps out, runs up and asks if we are going to shoot.....I said no...he runs back, gets his bow, kneels down in front of our truck, ranges the distance and draws back with all the cars driving by and all of us watching this idiot! I thought for sure he was going for the small 40 yrd buck but noticed the severe angle of his aim and watched as the arrow flew over buck 1, over buck 2 and sunk into buck 3 at exactly 100 yrds! That buck ran a circle and fell over. The hunter was amazed that he made the shot! He said everyone at a certain bowshop told him to sight in a 100yrd pin and use it if he wanted to tag a goat! He said he had shot a few times at 100 yrds and was able to hit a hay bale a few times!!! To make it even worse, we had the guy jump in our truck to haul butt over to the other side of the feild to intercept another hunter who was running out to this guys dead goat! I thought for sure he was going to tag it before we could get there! We let the hunter out and he had to run up to this guy, who was now holding the horns, and put his tag on it as fast as he could! The hunter wasn't even the first person to touch his own trophy. There were several things that happened that day that made me upset, and unfortunately I don't think it's all that uncommon in those areas that get pounded by the majority ;) That's why I only put in for Antelope in 42M ;)

Best of luck to you guys with 19A tags, hope you have the best hunt possible ;) JIM>

I have been hunting way in the back off the powerline road and it is about a 2 mile walk to even get in the Antelope. I have only seen 2 guys the 3 days I have hunted. I am leaving in the morning to go walk my a## off and see if I can get one this time.
