Cases getting stuck in chamber

Recommended Posts

Factory loads I assume?

As a gunsmith, the first place I'd look is the chamber. On a bolt gun or AR polishing the chamber isn't too much of an issue BUT too much and you really mess it up.

Contact Remington: They have authorized service centers, send your fired brass with the rifle and explain what you've found.

Scratches on the case and sticky extraction: (I DO NOT suggest using a cleaning rod to tap it out - get a solid steel rod but ONLY AS A LAST RESORT) In fact, when I sent it back I'd leave a stuck case in it.

It sounds like the chamber needs polishing, BUT, when they cut the chamber the reamer may have been dull.

I have had several jobs where a case gets stuck - usually in an AR - and the customer tries to beat it out and breaks the rod inside the barrel or deforms it to where the rod cannot be extracted. This is where the RCBS Stuck case puller is your best friend. I was truly amazed the first time I used one!

Here's a short dissertation: Brass is soft, when the round fires, pressure forms the brass to the existing chamber (fire forming for wildcat cartridges). Chambers are polished to allow the newly formed brass to extract. Any burr or groove will allow brass to flow into it which prevents extraction.

If you have some case lube (for reloading) try lubing a case and shoot it, same principal as greasing a cookie sheet to prevent food from sticking. See if it's any easier to extract, then take a chamber brush and a drill. The camber brush is brass and softer than the chamber but can be used to really get junk out of there (rust, believe it or not, will lock up an action easily). Remove the bolt and take the barreled action out of the stock, connect the short cleaning rod to the drill and drill IN - if you drill in reverse you'll spin the brush off and make more work on yourself.

Hope this helps:

Disclaimer, since I do not have the rifle in front of me and I am not performing any work on it, I assume no liability on it's maintenance. Fair enough?

Contact Remington and they will give you shipping instructions. FYI, I am getting ready to send a Franchi back to Benelli and they said do not send any fired shells with the gun but to send them in a separate package. Not sure if that is just their policy or UPS.

Predator, Not UPS policy that I'm aware of, empty brass. They always say not to ship any ammo.

FWIW, if you happen to ship ammo UPS or any other way, it's got to have the OMD or ORD or whatever that stupid label is....

Yeah, the USPS regs are NOT the same as Federal regs, You can ship a long gun US MAil, for repair and it can be shipped back to you, no FFL required. To ship a handgun USPS, it has to go FFL to FFL.

UPS, you have to declare the firearm but no other documentation required.

If they provide a shipping label, it'll state which carrier to use,

Benelli has excellent customer service. I had a customer's gun, called to get parts which they would not ship to me, BUT they'd fix it for free or ship the parts to the owner. Seems that gunsmiths were getting parts for free from them then charging the customers for parts, so Benelli stopped that practice.

They said any parts would be at dealer cost and there was a base fee of $80 since I'm not the original owner. Last gun I shipped back to a friend UPS made me send it to an FFL Holder and I had to show UPS a copy of their signed FFL.

Last I heard handguns were only accepted by FEDX and I have never tried to ship a firearm via USPS.

WAY off topic, BUT UPS and FEDEX you have to ship handguns overnight express. Shipping to your friend absolutely has to go through FFL.

Mailing handguns - FFL to FFL.

Benelli is charging for parts? What do they care who the original owner is? That's totally different to me, usually they ship free to the owner, for repair, most of my customers (hence they're CUSTOMERS) pay me a nominal fee to ship and receive.

Good news, got my gun back from Remington, and everything is good. Took it to the range this weekend and shot 3 different brands of factory loads through it and it worked flawlessly. Time to start working up a load for it as I have a Nov hunt in 23. Thanks for all the info and feedback.
