wklman Report post Posted August 12, 2007 basically a necked down .308 to 7mm-.284 cal. i've never had one but it sounds like a good kids or ladies gun.probably not alot of recoil to it since it has the shorter 308 case.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Yep, thats exaclty what it is, 308 necked down. supposed to be a flat, fast shootin gun. use light bullets and ur good to go.
Apatkelley Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Excellent choice for anyone. I shoot a Remington 700 chambered in 7mm-08 and my wife shoots the Mod 7 youth in 7mm-08. So far, I'v shot two large mule deer bucks, 4 coues bucks, 1 antelope and one large cow elk with mine and my wife has taken 4 cow elk with hers. My 11year old daughter also killed her cow elk with one shot from the little 08. I had to shoot my antelope twice and my cow elk only because I made poor shots. My wife killed three of her elk with one shot each. I generally shoot a 120 sierra with 49 grains H380 for deer and antelope and a 145 speer grand slam for elk. GameHauler Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Thanks Apatkelly I also purchased the Rem model 7 for the girls They have used it on many successful hunts to include Antelope,WT,javelina, and Cow Elk. My concern is it enough gun for a full grown Bull? I had Linnea use my model 700 in 7MM Mag last year for her Bull The problem is it is a large gun for a small structured Girl She is much more comfortable With the model 7 I know shot placement is the most important factor, and I have now worries about her doing that, BUT!! Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Mike, I have a real gun that she can borrow. I know that Huntn' coues has the same gun for his daughters, and they have harvested a bull with the 7mm-08. As far as a light gun I think the best light elk gun there is, is the .270..... I don't own one but Colton has smoked a few elk with one and so has my Bro-in-Law and they don't hardly kick. Other wise a magnum with a break and a pad or a Short Mag will do nicely! Heck, Colton might even let her shoot his.....
GameHauler Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Real Gun And why are you sucking up to Lark this morning
Huntn coues Report post Posted August 12, 2007 Yep Caitlin smoked up her bull with the 7mm 08 and let me tell you it did it's job. The bull didn't even take a step it just dropped in it's tracks. I am very impressed with this round and the girls are not afraid of the recoil at all which I think is very important for them being petite as they are. Mike Mike The 7mm-08 is enough gun to kill a mature bull elk using the 140 Gr. NBT. It retains enough kinetic energy (+1000 foot pounds) past 300 yards. Reference your doubt about your girls shot placement, the 7mm-08 would be less likely to cause her to flinch. If they start flinching, no telling where the bullet will go!!!! That Girl can drive tacks at 300yds Thanks for your input on the round Mike Sorry Mike. That seems common in the girls and women. My wife and daughter can do the same. I think they control their excitement at the crucial moment better then us. Good luck. And remember, MEMORIES SCORE HIGHER THAN INCHES!!!
