Does AZGFD sell our info

Recommended Posts

I lucked out and drew an early archery 23N bull tag. I haven't even received my tag yet and I've already got info offering guided hunts in the mail. How did they get my address and know I got a tag? I don't mind the reading material but it just makes me wonder who else has my info.

Yes they do. I forget how much it costs but anyone can order the lists of all people and their address for specific hunts. I think it's a per person price but some outfitters could confirm that for me. Pretty sneaky and easy way to make some extra money for them. I don't know where it says they are allowed to do that but I would assume it's in the fine print somewhere.

Yes, guides and outfitters can and do purchase the lists of successful applicants (resident and non-resident) from the Arizona Game & Fish Department. The cost is 10 cents a name with a minimum of 1,000 names per species. In some cases like antelope and sheep, it costs $100 for a list, no matter how many names are on it.

All you get is the name and address, no personal information such as date of birth or phone numbers.

Plus guides/outfitters have to provide a signed and notarized document to AZGFD telling them what the list is going to be used for. In my case it is to "solicit guide service for the successful applicants."

For most guides/outfitters this is a low percentage way to obtain clients. I'd say about 1-2% will respond.

For me, I maintain a client list and then they call if and when they draw. If I don't have hunters in a particular area I'd like to guide in, or want more clients for my guides, then I'll send out mailers. Pretty expensive though, and like I said, low return on the investment. It is however, the cost of doing business.

I understand that is the only way of getting a list of successful applicants. But i don't agree with g&f making more money off of us.

It's a good thing, it tells you which outfitters not to use I,e, the ones who contact you. The good ones don't have to chase ambulances.

The dept is probably required by the state to charge. AZ, WY, and OR all charge for every public info request/non published report I make of their respective dept's.

Whats your issue with making a very small, insignificant fee for providing a service that benefits other people who are also trying to make money?

I am happy to have people who are making money from hunting and fishing paying more of the cost to manage wildlife.

Seems like a strange thing to be upset about.

I think its horse chit. I get plenty of junk mail already and it makes me furious when solicitations from them start showing up. Its nobody's business what tag I drew. I consider it a violation of privacy.

I'm afraid you are pissin up a rope my friend. Being pimped off is a very acceptable thing. In fact if gooberment actually reached in the pockets of citizens, there would be a certain percentage. That would try to convince you it is for your own good!!!!! After all what do we really know?????

Take care, Willie

I don't think they care so much about them paying a fee but the fact that azgfd gives out our names, addresses and tags drawn without our permission. And then to top it off they make money off of it. I don't believe in any of the application process it asks if they can solicit our personal info to whoever they want. And if it did 95 percent of people would say no.

I don't mind this junk mail. Nice reading material while sitting on the can.

I did get some free dvd's that had some pretty good horn porn in them.... but still, not a fan at all of my first & last name, street address, and the location of where & when I'm hunting being distributed to anyone that wants it.

I know it can be frustrating, however the information (successful recipients and their address) released by G&F departments is a matter of public record. The fee collected is probably what is calculated to cover the cost of processing the information. Remember, a hunting permit is for a public resource.

You don't think the 13.00 per app is enough?

To manage hundreds of thousands of wildlife? Um... No. And it costs them money to pull the information, the guide stands to make money, so no I don't think the $13 app fee is enough. Personally it would tick me off if I as an applicant had to pay the operating costs to help supply a guide with information he needs to run his business. Why should I pay for that?
