Heat Report post Posted April 26, 2016 First off Congratulations on your tag! What a nice surprise. If you guys want to get technical, it's an American Pronghorn, not an antelope, or analope, or any of that. True antelope live in Africa. They have horns, similar to a goat or cow. A pronghorn is alone in it's family and genus, not represented by any other animal on the planet. It is unique due to the sheath over a bone core that is shed every year. Deer shed entire antlers, pronghorn shed only a sheath, true horned animals like antelope do not shed anything from it's head.
Flatlander Report post Posted April 26, 2016 Well I don't know about everyone else but I feel better knowing that. Thanks Heat. I don't have regs with me but aren't there 2 rifle hints on 19a. One north of 89a and one east of the power line road? Which one did you draw? Perkins place is north of 89a, and it sounds like Jeff's hunt was east of the power line road. KingJeff187 Report post Posted April 26, 2016 19A (north of AZ Hwy 89A and that portion south of AZ Hwy 89A that is east of Fain Rd, north of AZ Hwy 69/169,and west of FR 151/643) Buck antelope 30 only one hunt in the regs. Same one I had in 2011 @flatlander i was Just west of the FR151 when i shot mine. The other 2 we shot came off of the fain ranch which is the open portion of the unit south of 89A. and you are correct Perkins is north of the 89A (east of chino valley. same with the other deeded ranches in 19a. I understand how you could have been confused by my location description. My intention was to indicate That I was closer to the 169/69 hwy when I shot my goat. Rather than the northern and western part of the unit. so in a matter of speaking I was in the very south east corner of the portion of the unit that was open. My description was kinda shitty. To my knowledge they do not open up the far east part of 19A ever or at least not in the last several years to my knowledge.
bigorange Report post Posted April 27, 2016 Plenty of public land and ranches that don't charge access fees. Killed my archery buck on Deep Wells Ranch and Fain Ranch has a lot of space too. Plus a nice bit of public land right behind Perkins...
ej20 Report post Posted April 27, 2016 Thanks everyone for the advice. I will definitely be doing as much scouting as I can. I actually have the full support of my wife for this hunt which has never happened ha-ha.
Tight Guy Report post Posted April 28, 2016 The Perkins ranch is charging a trespass fee for access, and because of that they are very careful about watching for trespassers. The deep well ranch allows foot access and in 19A is east of highway 89a and extends to the railroad tracks. Permission is granted, but I would check in with the ranch house as a courtesy, and to thank them for the access. #1 tip, get the landowner chip for your GPS, I have been told more then once that I was on private land by the Perkins when in reality the chip showed differently. It is well worth the money just to avaid a fine
ej20 Report post Posted April 28, 2016 Thanks for the tip tight guy. I do not have a GPS of my own and was thinking of borrowing one for that reason so I would know exactly where I was. I don't know what a chip is but sounds like it will show me the ranch boundaries. Is that correct? I've never used a GPS before.

You can also get this for your phone. $20-30 and you just download it. Way better then on a gps especially if you have good cell service which you will in 19a. This is a hunt that is truly not doable without a landownership chip or app on your phone. Don't even try it. Your biggest problem with the rifle tag is that all of the really good Bucks will be dead by the time your hunt opens. The muzzy hunt in this unit is the gem. All you can do is scout out the top 10 bucks in this unit and pray for them through the bow and muzzy hunts and the one or two that make it you need to kill on opening day or yore going home with a 75"er. I had the tag in 2010 and shot an 80"ER with my bow. The muzzy guys killed the 84 and 87" bucks I was after. The gun hunters all killed 75" bucks.
ej20 Report post Posted April 29, 2016 That's a good point yotebuster I put in PTO for the whole hunt but all the better bucks will probably go the first 2 days. What is the app called for your phone? Is that your 80"er on your profile picture?
ej20 Report post Posted April 29, 2016 I'm wondering if I should take days off right before the hunt instead of towards the end of the hunt. In hopes to pick out a good one and take him opening day
Flatlander Report post Posted April 29, 2016 I just don't see a scenario where this hunt lasts 5 or more days. I've had the archery tag in 19a and the muzzy tag next door in 19b. Spend your time scouting, meeting land owners and learning to judge goats.

What is the app called for your phone? Is that your 80"er on your profile picture? It's called "huntgpsmaps". It's out of Montana. I would take 3-5 days off ahead and 2-3 for the hunt. If there is a big one left on opening day he won't make it till the second day. It's different then some of the northern units where they go in and out of the trees. They aren't any secret bucks in 19a! The avatar buck is the one I killed in there. Scored 79 6/8. Not quite 80 but I round up!

If there is a good buck running around it won't make it till day 2 of the hunt. Like I said we shot all 3 of our goats on opening day in 2011. 2 in the Truck by 9 am. Shot mine a 3:30 pm in the afternoon and then hit the processor in chino valley (back then he charged $90 to do the whole goat) smokin deal i thought. and if rounding up is the trend Yotebuster Then mine was 82"..Haha Nice goat in your profile picture. ej20 Report post Posted April 29, 2016 Thanks for all the pointers guys I really appreciate it. Looks like I'm going to have to change up my PTO and talk with my cousins hopefully they can be there during the week. I would love to get an 80"ish buck that's my goal. I called we ranches yesterday. 2 didn't answer and fain ranch is going to get back with me today hopefully.
