Schmitty Report post Posted August 14, 2007 Well, it has been 20 years since I sat in Hunter Safety Class along with my fellow boy scouts down in Yuma. I still remember the instructor, a fellow named Gene and quite a few of his stories and lessons. For our field day, we camped out at the Adair range the night prior and experienced a good AZ flash flood and the entire range was under 6" of water. I remember shooting at (I didn't hit any) clay targets over the water and envisioning that I was shooting ducks over a marsh. I'm sure that the online course, while more convenient for many, has no way to equal the experience of sitting in a classroom with other excited kids and a lively instructor. At least they retained the field day. However, I know that when my own kids come of age in a few years, that we will be attending one of the live classes. I do believe that the online version is a benefit for those in remote locations, or experienced adults with a limited schedule. But, for the kids sake, I hope that most if not all will attend the live classes so that they too can reflect on fond memories after two decades have passed. I did follow the link for the practice test and used the birth year of my father (1946) to go for the full gusto. It looks like I'm a bit rusty and scored an 83%. Looks like I'll need to sit in on a few classes with my kids when the time comes. Good huniting, Schmitty

I, too, think kids should attend a class in person where possible because one important aspect is the ability to ASK the instructor questions. OTOH, I'm the perfect example of someone who can utilize the online system. I went through both the basic and instructor courses long before the bonus point deal was initiated. So for me to get that point, I need to retake the course/test. Obviously, I'm pretty savy about most of the course materials, so spending 20 hrs. again isn't necessary. But I'll gladly do the field day/test part. -TONY
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted August 14, 2007 Alright! I passed the two pre-tests, just need to sign up for my field course - I'm so glad that they finally did this - there was no way I could have made time in my schedule to attend all of the classes! Tyson Did you actually take the official pre-certification test or just the practice versions?? -TONY I took both the practice test, which then let me take the pre-certification test, after I completed that I was allowed to print a Field Day Qualification Exam Certificate which will allow me to go take the Field Day Course and the Final Exam, good for about 60 days. Huntn coues Report post Posted August 14, 2007 Tyson What was the latest field day available for the online test?? After speaking with AZGFD they told me that the online field day has nothing to do with the field day shown for the 20hr classes. Quigly told me that 11/4 was was the last field day available (so far) and that was a couple of weeks ago.

I would guess more will be put in place if the demand warrants, however. Also, I would assume they have scheduled them until the 2007 holidays and will add more immediately after Jan.1 in time for the Feb. elk/antelope draw deadline. This is a typical time for them anyway to educate all those kids who get firearms for Xmas. -TONY

AARRGGHH I sure hope that they have a class on one of the next three weekends.

I know the regs state that a youngster must be between 10 and 13 to take the classes, but I have a call into G&F to clarify it nonetheless. I'll let you know fer shure! -TONY
Joe Kauffman Report post Posted August 14, 2007 I am in the same situation as my son turns 10 Oct 18th. From what I have been told several times by G&F, anyone can take the hunters education class regardless of age, but they can't complete it (meaning the graduation test) until they are 10. So the online training is a real saver for us. I was a bit worried about trying to find a class that fit our timing just right where he could start it a bit before his birthday, but have the class end after. I give a bit thumbs up to the online training and we've already started the training to make sure it's burned into his brain. Not only so he can pass the field day exam, but so that the laws, ethics and safety that he will be learing will last him a lifetime. There are still quotes I remember from taking the class 20 years ago that I use almost everytime I'm in the field.
GHOSTLUVR Report post Posted August 14, 2007 Guys, according to G&F, you can buy your child a license and apply for big game permits before they turn 10. However, if drawn they must complete the safety course and be 10 years of age when they graduate. Hopefully they pass and are able to use the tag. I'm in the same shoes next year with my daughter (10 in July, application deadlines in June!!).
Joe Kauffman Report post Posted August 14, 2007 That's spot on ghostluvr. I purchased a license and applied for deer and javelina for my 9 year old this fall and am hoping to get the education training done before then. It's a strange feeling sitting down at the table filling out my application, then looking at the dates and having my sons hunt times to think about as well! I told him it really didn't matter if we got drawn for overlapping hunts, he'll always take priority....we just have to get his tag filled the first day so we can continue on to mine... Just another thought. It would be nice to have a field day date request area on the G&F website. This way people could request when they need a training day and G&F could make training day decisions based on those stats. It would seem that they would have a better turn out as well as it would fall in a time slot that people have actually requested.

My first two made it by the chinny chin chin. Just in time for their spring hunt. Back in Jan/Feb I was just banking on being able to find her a class that graduated sometime after her 10th b-day. As I sit right now it does not look good. I sure am going to hate to tell her that she has TAG SOUP.

You guys have it all right, so I won't repeat it other than the need to be 10 BEFORE actual completion of the HE course. So keep up the good work. Outdoor Writer Report post Posted August 14, 2007 Tony, Tell your contact to hook a brotha up with a Field day on 11/10 or 11/17. Troy I doubt I have that much pull with them. But I'll call the HE supervisor later and see if he has any idea when more will be added. He's in a meeting this morning. -TONY
