sea cowboy Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Just pulled this from the Star's website: ARIZONA DAILY STAR A Tucson man was killed and his body found at his camp site in the Santa Rita Mountains Sunday, police said. The man told family members he was going hunting and camping on Thursday. They became concerned when they hadn?t heard from him by Sunday and went looking for him at his usual camp site. They found his body at his camp site off Forest Service Road 485 and originally reported to sheriff's deputies that the man had been mauled by a bear. Sheriff investigators classified the death as a homicide. The body was brought down the mountain last night. ?Somebody came upon him between Thursday and Sunday and murdered him,? said Sgt. James Ogden, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff?s Department. Authorities are not releasing the name of the victim until this afternoon, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The investigation continued this morning. Read more about it in tomorrow?s Arizona Daily Star. Guys this is just another example why G&F needs to amend the regulation prohibiting carrying a firearm durring archery season. .270 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 dang, any idea who he was? this is sad. really sad. is there a number or anything where a guy could donate a little to his family? southeast Az. is becoming more and more dangerous. drugs, illegal alien smugglers, etc. as far as the gun deal, you can have a gun in your truck or in your camp. not a thing wrong with it, even if the g&f might frown on it. if you get anymore info, keep us informed. this really makes me feel bad. a guy oughta be able to feel safe from bad people in woods. newbee Report post Posted September 1, 2004 (edited) It is better to be juged by twelve than carried by six, (I didn't know you couldn't carry a pistol with you) But I hunt alone and sure as SH** wont go out there with out a side arm -end of story! My prayers are with our lost brother and his family. end note* Maybe we should petition or loby to have that regulation amended, even if you are with a partner or hunting in a group ,some one with a gun can compromise your saftey pretty quick if you cant match them either way there is enough supporting factors involved that it should be acceptable to protect your self. if they are afraid of someone doing the wrong thing with thier pistol there are already laws against poaching and it should be classified as such. my 2 cents for what its worth Edited January 1, 1970 by newbee

daryl_s Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Very sad. People, please don't go hunting by yourself in southern Arizona, it's just too dangerous. I'll be in 36B in October and if you are going to be down there and need a place or someone to camp with PM me. I'll be down there with my brother and dad. It's not worth the risk. gnoto Report post Posted August 10, 2005 I have not heard a word about it. I spend a lot time down in 34 and 36. I feel like somebody is watching me all the time. Quick story. Mo (hunting partner) and I were down in 36B Warsaw canyon area. Probably within a mile fo the border. I know we never crossed I kept a GSP on the whole time. Anyway we witnessed some very odd stuff. First we came aross a trailer at the bottom of a ravine. It was in good condition not too old. There was no road! Up un the ridge we found an old Caterpiller kinda dismantled. If it was used it was disassebled after use. So there is this kinda odd looking fairly new trailer at teh bottom of a ravine. It was raining but we glassed the area well and noticed it was obviously trampled pretty well and the area around the camper was worn to dirt. Then a green jeep suddenly appears ahead on the road. About 5 minutes later on this winding cliff side road we spot the back end of the Green Jeep just around a bend. Mo and I were in no mood for an ambush. I had my .41 blackhawk and a Dan Wesson .357 Mo had his .30 cal and a S & W .38 We weree not that well prepared for something so we hit the breaks and backed off the two track into the brush. We got a good vantage point and what do you know the Jeep comes creeping around the corner. I never got a really good look at teh driver the wind rain and windshield of his jeep obscured him. He was not a hunter in my opinion. No supplies in the jeep, Just gas cans. Who knows we stayed out of view an dhe went back down the road. At no point during the week did that jeep come out of that canyon. Maybe he was a homesteader, a coyote, a mule, or under cover. Just keep your head up and think twice before you confront anybody. Who knows what they are carrying but I bet its not for hunting Deer and Pigs!
az4life Report post Posted August 10, 2005 Some strange things do happen down there. I agree, about packing a firearm. I would do it anytime I was in that area. You cannot take anything for granted in that situation. Even the BP could be a problem. Did you read about the BP agent that forged hsi documents and had been an agent since 2001. He is an illegal from Mexico and has been helping Coyotes and Drug traffickers while being on his BP job. Sure it is probably the exception, but who knows what other things are going on! firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 while posting on another subject, some one told me carrying a hand gun and a rifle was silly. i belive the exact words were " why carry a hand gun when you have a high powered rifle on your shoulder" how many shots does a big rifle hold? between 3 and 5 right (my short mag holds 3) and how fast can you shoot those 3 rounds? not very. my xd-40 holds 11 .40 caliber rounds, and i can shoot those as fast as i can squueze the trigger and it sure is easier to weild in close corners than a heavy rifle! dad also carries his .357 mag when we are out there along with his 7mm RUM can never be too carefull or ready! BASS Report post Posted August 11, 2005 I leave my 1911A1 in the camp. I don't hunt high trafic area that would be dangerous in my mind. If I had my choice I would pick a rifle with a large magizine over a pistol, but mostly because I don't feel 100% confident with a pistol yet.
gnoto Report post Posted August 30, 2005 I carry a long gun for shooting long generally. I do not always keep one in the chamber and once you bring that rifle up ther is little you can do but the invevitable which we would all be trying to avoid. If its a shotgun or my short model 94 that would be one thing. There are just too many times you are not going to make much use of that big stick.
