metau Report post Posted April 20, 2016 So after helping with the junior turkey camp in 6A this past weekend, my interest in pursuing a turkey with a bow is once again in my head. I'm just curious how many on here have actually been successful at the OTC turkey archery?

metau Report post Posted April 20, 2016 Rather be lucky than good.... Nice looking bird. Take it he waited until he went behind a tree or turned his fan before drawing?
208muley Report post Posted April 20, 2016 I'm thinking about the OTC turkey hunt this year as well. The hunt is a bit tougher the later it gets but if you can get one to gobble you can usually get a shot at him. The hen are usually on nests by the OTC hunt so the toms are lonely. If you have a roost or a known strutting area set up a blind and a decoy or two and call every 20 min or so and wait. If you don't have the intell on those get your hiking shoes on and walk two tracks and tops of ridges calling as you move along. Vary the calling from soft to loud, short duration to long duration till you get a response. Late season some years ago I was just cruising thru the woods calling 4-5 notes at a time when I heard a hen calling like crazy, maybe in response to me idk, and a Tom sounded off and headed her direction ( the Tom was closer to me than her but didn't respond to me). Talking a play from her play book I started calling non stop for quite a while, not long after I heard her yelp a few times and It was close. I stayed on the call and about 5 min later the hen and the Tom were inside 20 yards and the Tom went home with me. Late season can be tough and you can log a lot of miles but if you can get a little lucky it can be very rewarding. Good luck out there.
metau Report post Posted April 20, 2016 So what you're saying is that I now have an excuse to spend more time in the field and less time at work? Aw-shucks....
