Tree watering ideas.

Recommended Posts

Ive got close to 300 trees on my property and im tired of dealing with the above ground drip system that's in place now. The small drip emitters are constantly falling off, popping off, getting plugged, etc. and the hoses are a pain to move around when I drag the ground. I'm hoping to get some ideas on some type of watering system that is completely under the ground. My entire property has pvc water lines across it now, I just need an idea on what type of emitter to use that can be reliable 18" under the ground. Anybody got any ideas? I really want to be able to just hop on the tractor and blade every inch of the property without having to spend half the day rearranging drip hoses. I also don't want to have to unplug and replace emitters every two days. Any of you guys watering your trees with underground emitters of some sort?

I water using a domestic well. I'm not so sure I could afford to put that much water on the ground. I guess I forgot to add that I would like to keep it economical. I don't make any money off of these trees. They were on the property when I bought it and they are as decorative as they are anything else. I have a mixture of pine, fruit, willow and cottonwood trees.

Not sure the lay of the land but have you considered rain water harvesting? I set my fruit trees so they collect rain naturally and soon I'll have a water holding system from my roofs. I water about 100 various trees on my place with a well right now. My bill is 35 or less a month. Actual usage is 5-10 dollars. I tried to attach a UofA extension PDF on watering but couldn't figure it out.

I haven't looked I to that but I will research it. It's flat and sandy farmland where I live.

I'm on a very slight slope with most trees below me so it works really good (except new planted trees that still need the hose once a week) I also water about 10 mesquite with grey water from the shower, sinks, and washer.

Not sure where you live, but I was Checking out some ground near San Simon today and noticed that they have sprinkler systems installed for their pecan trees in some orchards. (Newer operation on the north side of the 10). Looks like they have 1/2" galvanized risers that get the heads 16" or so off the ground. They are positioned about 2' from the base of every tree, in line with the tree rows so they can still disk and spray in-between rows. Something like this should work. I bet bubblers would work with the same set up. I have a relative that uses a similar sprinkler system for his apple orchard, but he has above ground 2" hdpe and larger sprinklers on a 40' grid. Works good for him set up with an electronic timer.

1 inch black poly ranch pipe. put 6-30 trees per circuit with a mushroom bubbler that provides up to 200 gal per hour(adjustable 0 to apx 200gph) at each tree. i remember a nieghbor who put a 3/4 inch garden faucett on each tree in place of the bubbler but he had turn each tree on and off 1 at a time.
