TLH Report post Posted August 9, 2007 Yup, been there done that. Actually there are a lot of deer there--we went in from the Deer Creek side and hiked in and camped there. On the first day we saw one other hunter in there--he had just shot a lion that was chasing a doe--two days later we had two 3x3's and were on our way back to the truck--we ran into the guy with the lion and he shot a spike buck. He said he had seen a bigger buck with the spike but he wanted the spike for the meat. yes, there are deer in there.

Very impressive, thanks 4 the info. that is a hefty hike back; w/ a lion and a deer! It seems no body really wants put any effort into hiking anymore. Id rather do the hike and not see any other hunters than share 1 mtn. range w/ the whole town.
cpugsie Report post Posted August 10, 2007 I've hunter there several times. Some years are better than others but some years it was a field day. Give yourself a good couple hours to get back in there. It's quite a hike. You'll see deer!
billrquimby Report post Posted August 10, 2007 My father-in-law and I hunted around the peak from the Fort Grant side every year from about 1958 to 1965 or '66. A couple of years after that Lester Stewart shot a beautiful B&C mule deer on China Peak, of all places. What it was doing up there? Who knows? Back then, the Record Desert Whitetail Club dropped the membership of any member who shot a mule deer, and as far as I know, Lester was never able to find a 100-point whitetail to get back into the club. A lot of things have changed in that part of the Galiuros since then. For one thing, we used to see whitetails and turkeys in the oak-filled draws way out onto the flats. The last time I hunted up the road from the Sunset Ranch was about 1985 or so, and all we could find where whitetail tracks used to wipe out our tire tracks overnight were mule deer.
