elkaholic Report post Posted April 6, 2016 the # 1 - way to solve the problem is a 2-3 yr waiting period to apply if you are successfully drawn As easy as still being able to put in for a bonus point each yr. during your waiting period - + being able to apply for leftovers G&F will still sell every tag every yr and by the 3rd yr - guys will be applying with 5 bpts if you count hunted ed and Loyalty It would rotate the people getting tags -so by the 3rd yr your chances are even better as the odds would be greatly in your favor with the reduced number of available applicants. no more waiting 6- 8 10 yrs on most big game animals much better odds on antelope tags , Too easy of a solution

MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted April 6, 2016 That's a completely false statement, updates would help a ton. No more random lottery crap, preference points, sitting out period for successfully draws, alot of updates would help. Why should someone be able to draw several of the same tag while someone else draws none. Makes no sense to me.

But you are wrong. Think of it this way, for the antelope hunt I drew two years ago there were 6 tags and almost 1,000 applicants. So if you excluded 3 years of tag holders from the draw the pool would be 982 applicants instead of 1,000. Statistically not much changed. Ok so I guess I did do a little math but hopefully everyone follows.
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Its a random lottery with each person not drawn having an extra ticket every year they don't draw. 15 tickets (years) with thousands applying for a few hundred or less tags. It sucks but it's the "fairest" situation I know of. Everyone has a chance. Trust me I know the pain but oh well. We can make the draw socialism!
Str8Shot Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Elkaholic it was the Hunters who Chose bonus points versus a waiting period after successful draw all them years ago... I agree with you though that # of tags versus apps these days combining the two could possibly shave down the number of years , but there will still be quiet a few waiting 8 plus years due to how the lottery system works
bonecollector Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Happens every year. Every year everybody has a chance to draw a tag. I drew my antelope tag with 3 pts last yr.
AZ8 Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Doesn't matter if you exclude X amount of people every year. They'll just be replaced with new applicants. More people, more apps. Nothing we can do about it. Arizona population: 1980: 2,718,215 1990: 3,665,228 2000: 5,130,632 2010: 6,392,017 2020(projection): 7,300,000
CouesFanatic Report post Posted April 6, 2016 A fair solution would be like the Nevada system where your bonus points are squared. Dramatically increased odds for each year not drawing is fair. AZ's system increases your odds with each bonus point very little. Someone with 18 points doesn't have a whole lot better chance than someone with 4 as long as its not in the bonus point pass. Study the draw sheets, you will see. With a squared bonus point system your odds actually increase with each bonus point.
Lv2hnt Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Truths, and not-so truths, have been offered already earlier in this thread. As a native Arizonan past my younger years, I've seen it all over the years here in our state. As we all know, Arizona's main problem is too many people (more & more each year, unfortunately) wanting to hunt too few animals in an arid state with limited elk-supportable land. That's NOT going to change. As stated before, if you want to hunt more often, you might look into hunting out of state as well (just stating an unfortunate fact). The lottery draw began in 1971, if memory serves me right. G&F had successful tag draw-ees sit out 3 years (back in the late '80s?). That lasted only 2-3 years (?). As Flatlander pointed out > statistically it does NOT better your draw odds worth a hill of beans, and it deprives G&F with needed revenue (I know ... but important). I don't remember if bonus points were offered for those off years under that plan. The only thing that may be an improvement is the squaring of bonus points --- not sure how seriously G&F has considered this. We still have it much better than hunters in Utah or New Mexico ...
elkaholic Report post Posted April 6, 2016 ok so antelope wouldn't change much - kinda figured with limited tags - since your doing the math how about the elk draw applications !? yes it would limit the samo 's always drawing tags every yr. after the wait they enter with the bogus points - a so called big advantage over first timers- if you believe that ! goinhuntn Report post Posted April 6, 2016 I know we are only sitting on 5 points & others have been waiting a lot longer, I know its luck of the draw I just needed to vent to help me cope with having to try again next year (haha). I will still be chasing bulls in September as my cousin drew early archery, but it would sure been nice to have a tag in my pocket. Good Luck to all who drew!! wklman Report post Posted April 6, 2016 Wait until you get 16 bonus points. Then not get drawn. Fun, fun. Good thing I've got my Minnesota property to hunt on or I'd be one sad dude.
