Spending time in a tree stand ?

Recommended Posts

Well I have a really nice Buck comming into my salt lick. So needless to say I will be spending every chance I get in the stand. My question is what do you guys feel is esential to have in the stand with you. I'm planning on taking several books, food, water, a small video game, scent spray, and I'm probably going to load some books on tape on an IPOD. What do you guys do about having to go to the bath room? I know it's not everyone's favorite subject, but it's very important. Thanks.

For me personaly I wouldn't want any kind of head phones in my ears. Often times you can hear a deer coming in before you ever see it.

I was planning on just having one ear plug in my left ear that way I can still here, and I can still draw my bow back if need be.

I think its important to be constantly aware and completely still all the time while in a stand. With these coues deer, I wouldn't read a book. Too much noise and movement. Of course it depends on your set up. I've seen a whole lot more deer while concentrating on not moving and listening for the soft steps of a deer. In that picture it looks like you are in the thick scrub oak/manzanita country. They will appear out of nowear in that stuff!

I urinate right out of my stands. I've had deer sniff it and go right on to the salt.

I love reading books on stand, if I didn't I don't think I would have the patients to sit for more than a couple hours. I think that the little bit of movement/noise/distraction that you get when reading is outweighed by the benefit of the extra hours you can spend since you have something to keep you entertained.

I try and remember a gatoraide bottle to pee in.

I have never wizzed out of a tree stand, but I have talked to a few people that tell me that urine is sterile and

that it does not effect deer.

I might try it and see if it does not present a problem. :o

I definitely agree with TREESTANDMAN. I try to remove noise completely or close to it. Abnormal noises will spook a couse and he will have you nailed. I pack food that won’t make lots of noise, softer food (banana, sandwich, jerky), polyester clothing (sent blocker clothing and boots). I covered my treestand in that soft tape because of the metal. I paint my drinking, pissing, chewing bottle black. , paint my face and hands, I use E3 dead down wind scent eliminator. I try to pick out a tree where i can climb 35-40 feet. You said your thinking about taking an I-pod, I tried that and it definitely takes away your detection I constantly thought I herd something and would take out my ear plugs all the time, making way to much movement. Oh yea and try to go number 2 before you get in the stand.

What I do to kill the time in the stand is think about life.

It might be a little over the top but its works for me. You got a good looking deer to take. It would suck to miss that opportunity because you’re trying to put your book or video game away.

Good luck and let us know how you did

i have hunted out of treestands and I dont take anything that causes noise. Taking a leak out of your stand doesn't hurt anything. I would recommend that you do not go too high. If you can get up fifteen feet you are good. The higher you go the more drastic your shot angle. Also remember to practice shooting at that angle. Your arrow will hit at a totally different spot than if you are on the ground.. They make some really good pendulum sights that are just a knob that you loosen to let your sight level out. I have never used one but they take all the guesswork out. Try to be as still as possible I wouldnt recommend any books or having anything in your hands that you have to put away when a deer comes in. Also get a good bow hanger that swings out to make it easier to get your bow. Or use a bow hanger that fits on the bottom of your stand. Movement is the key. Have fun. Also remember to always have your safety harness on.

Big time ditto for sound! I'd say 75% of the time for me I hear the soft, quiet steps of a coues before I see him. There is no way I would impeed my ears. I do read a book, but only turn a page after a scan of my shooting lane. I use a camelback with the tube right next to my head so I don't need to move to drink. Many times I don't eat all day so I don't make any unessesary sound. (or I'm too excited to eat) I pee into a plastic bottle (why take the chance?) Making noise will be your worst mistake, moving will be the second. Text messaging your other hunting buddies is a great way to pass the time and adds to the excitement. The vibrate mode on the phone won't scare the deer. I use a small blind that is about two feet high and wraps around the base of my stand to cover any movement of my hands/book. My bow hanger hangs my bow right out in front of me so that my draw hardly moves the bow from the hanging position. MOST IMPORTANT, USE A FULL BODY SAFTEY HARNESS!!! Good luck, be safe, an get that buck!!!

I bring an empty gatorade bottle, wide mouthed of course. ;)

I've heard of lots of people whizzing right off the edge, but I'm too paranoid to give it a shot.

I sat in a tower blind in alberta for a week hunting whitetails. I peed right out the window into the snow below and had bucks walk right over it and paid no attention to it. I probably wouldn't use headphones either.

All good advice!

The solitude and quiet and concentration is wonderful. Good time to sort through stuff in your head, and also a good time to shut up and be quiet before the Eternal - He might have something to say to you.
