Neck sizing only for wssm

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there are any members who are only neck sizing there wssm brass. I have always used a full length die for my brass I shoot in my AR and bump the shoulder .0002 so the cases eject easier. I recently picked up a win model 70 25 wssm and thought about using a Wilson neck die since I already use these dies and a 21st Century arbor press for my Creedmoor. Will I still need to bump the shoulder for the bolt action, or could I get away with just neck sizing? David

You could probably get away with neck sizing only for a few firings, but you will eventually need to full length re size. The problem would be not enough head spacing as the brass loses elasticity and doesn't shrink back enough, and you could run into feeding issues, ejection issues, and dangerous pressures. I would recommend setting up your FL die to bump the shoulders back .002 from a fired case, and FL re size every time. This will make your brass more consistent. Keep in mind that not every piece of brass is going to shrink back to the same size after firing, so you will end up with inconsistent head spacing if you only neck size. You will need a head space gauge that measures off the datum line of the shoulder. Measure several pieces of fired brass and set your die up to bump the shoulder back .002 from the brass that has shrunk back the least amount.
