Mog Report post Posted March 19, 2016 I am starting to get interested in adding a suppressor to one of my hunting rifles. I haven't done much research yet but was wondering where to start. Is there a Smith or dealer that is reliable to walk me through it? What should I expect to pay? What kind of wait times are involved? Would appreciate input from those with experience. I am thinking of maybe doing a predator rifle and a deer rifle (I have a 220 Swift and a 300 wm). Would the benefits be worth the trouble?
bonecollector777 Report post Posted March 19, 2016 I don't know a ton about them but I read there are some law changes coming in July that will make it harder and more expensive to get them so if you're gonna do it do it now. I think any decent suppressor is gonna run $700+ just for the suppressor. Then you pay like $300 for your stamp. Then if you do a trust (you won't have to get law enforcement signatures) you pay about $150 for that. My buddy did his a couple months ago and I think from beginning to end took about 3 or 4 months to finally get it.
Couzer Report post Posted March 19, 2016 I would talk to Mr Silencer, they are pretty knowledgable about buying and laws. For me I bought the Quick detach titanium .308 Yankee hill. I can put it on all my hunting rifles, from a RUM to a AR. It's lightweight and comes on and off very easy. Cons: heats up with rapid fire, and has a ulgy hideous QD Flash Hider. Here is a link, looks like the have a black one now as well http://yhm.net/titanium-30-cal-q-d-phantom-2312.html
cactusjack Report post Posted March 19, 2016 I know a thing or 2 about them. The changes coming up are not supposed to make it more difficult, they are to try to get fewer people using a trust or LLC to buy them. Finger prints and photos will be required for each submission. Like what was required with a LEO sign off, but without the LEO sign off. As to hunting rifles with cans on them, I have several. From 223 all the way up to 300wsm. I like Silencerco Harvester30 a lot. I prefer a thread on can on my hunting rigs. I have the Omega, and 2 Harvesters already and am waiting on another Omega, 2 more Harvesters and a Hybrid. I have other cans that have quick attach mounts, but I keep them on my "tactical" carbines. I am in a put one on and forget it mode. It eliminates the POI shift that you will encounter shooting with and without the suppressor.
B4Dan Report post Posted March 20, 2016 Benefits are worth the trouble, get a light weight one if you can, if you have a barrel over 24" it makes it kind of awkward, first one I bought was steel, waiting on a titanium one to get out of jail, didn't know about the changes coming in July, I used LLC for this one. I went with AWC, they are in north PHX
Kingzero Report post Posted March 20, 2016 Contact Mr. Silencer like said above. Bruce is very knowledgeable and will answer any questions you have. If you have a good dealer then the whole process should be simple and straight forward. What you get all depends on your wants and needs, and how much will depend on what suppressor meets those wants and needs. If you want light weight, then titanium is the way to go but you will pay for it. If you want a quick detach design then it will cost more than a direct thread. I would take a serious look a the ThunderBeast Ultra series........very nice cans and are designed with accuracy being the main focus. I forgot wait time.....not sure right now but I just pickes up my Octane 45 two weeks ago and the wait was 5 months. Along with the new laws regarding finger prints and photos, I believe you also have to notify the chief LEO of your purchase. How that notification works is still a mystery. cactusjack Report post Posted March 21, 2016 The Sig store, next to Merchant firearms in Ahwatukee has some new cans that are interesting. At merchant they have many other brands.
azsugarbear Report post Posted March 31, 2016 A suppressor can drastically reduce the firing signature (initial explosion of gun powder) of a cartridge. However, it cannot do anything to reduce the "supersonic" signature produced by the bullet traveling at 2-3 times the speed of sound through the atmosphere. You typically do not hear the supersonic "crack" (breaking the sound barrier) of the bullet because your ears are still ringing from the 'boom' of all that gun powder. So if stealth is your goal, you will be disappointed. However, if you want to hunt/shoot without ear plugs then suppressors are great. They also act as a very efficient muzzle brakes. They can be heavy - especially when hanging off the end of long barrels. Oh- they will also have an acute change on your point of impact, so leave it on your rifle. Any Class 3 dealer can walk you through the process. They typically charge you $50-$75 for the paperwork. You will also need to shell out $200 for the tax stamp that goes on the application. Finally, there is the cost of the suppressor itself. Approvals are currently taking 5-7 months when transferring to an individual or trust.
Red Sparky Report post Posted March 31, 2016 That is why if you want to be stealthy you shoot subsonic rounds. Watch and listen to this for the difference in sound.
nralifer Report post Posted March 31, 2016 I have a friend who has a 338 Lapua with a suppressor made by Thunderbeast. The gun sounds like a 22 mag when fired, and the recoil is about the same. I was so impressed I have one on order. Thunderbeast uses a muzzle brake that is threaded to accept the can itself. You could get one can and use it on different rifles as long as each of the rifles were fitted with their muzzle brake. As an example, if you had say a 270 and a 338, get the suppressor and 2 muzzle brakes appropriate for the 338 and put a brake on each gun. You could then use the can on both guns by just screwing on the can on whatever gun you wanted to use first.
