ultramag Report post Posted August 7, 2007 I was impressed with bass pro shops on some things. The big 3 all have their highs and low points, SW seems to have better prices and seem to always have what I am looking for.
Schmitty Report post Posted August 7, 2007 TAM, Did Bill's Trading Post not have any 7828 in stock? Bill's pretty good at keeping most popular Hodgdon,IMR, Accurate, VV, and Winchester powders in stock and his prices are typically better than anywhere in Phoenix except for Bruno's. I need to pick up a can of 7828ssc as well to try in my new 6.5-06 AI. I was going to swing in today in fact, until I remembered that Bill is closed on Mondays. I'll let you know what I find, Schmitty
TAM Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Schmitty, is Bills in Prescott? I've only lived here a few months and haven't been to all the gun shops yet? Went to a gun shop the other day that is just south of wiskey row across from safeway and they couldn't get the 7828 in the super short cut. It would be nice if there is a local source for my powder. Thanks!
Schmitty Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Bill's Trading Post is on the west side of Montezuma a few blocks north of the Safeway in an old building more or less across from the fire station. From the outside, it looks like a nasty pawn shop with old glass bottles in the windows. Bill is a real character, he could sell popsicles to the eskimo's but his pricing is very fair and he's a good fellow. Besides powder and primers he doesn't keep much reloading items in stock. He always has a few used guns in stock, but he will order you anything you want and sell it to you at 10% above his cost. Usually the wholesale catalogs are right out on the counter so you can look through them, tack 10% onto the cost and you know what you'll be paying. I'll head in there today and let you know if he's got any 7828. Schmitty
.270 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 well shucks, the name "BASSpro" oughta tell a guy a little about which way their business is aimed. if you want a rapala or a boat, that's the place to go. bp, cabelas and dang sure the sportsmans outhouse, have a whole buncha not much when it comes to reloading supplies. best place in town for powder and bullets is the pistol parlor. these other places keep around a lot of the real popular calibers and weights in bullets, and seem to really keep up on what is en vogue (that's stylish to the folks from aj) but don't seem to have very much of a lot of the things i buy. we have several .264's in the house, PP is the only place in town i can find a good selection or .264 bullets. i've noticed that a lot of places don't even have a good stock of .277 and .308 diameter bullets anymore. i'm kinda sure that them are still sorta popular sizes. cabelas and basspro are a blast to knock around in and they have a lotta clothes and shoes and camping gear and new guns, but they don't do real good on the reloading stuff. i'll say this about BP, my wife broke her leg awhile back and was in a wheelchair and on crutches for awhile. we went to basspro but didn't take her chair. there wasn't one up front and they did go find one for us. trophyhunter Report post Posted August 7, 2007 I went to bps the other day to get a few more cameras . they were $20.00 more there . was getting ready to leave when a gentelman came up to talk to me he was the store manager he aksed if I found what I was looking for . I told him I had but they were $20.00 more then what I can get them at Sportsmans he said that they would price match any store . so I got the cameras there for the same price . If you find something you need it wouldnt hurt to ask about the price if you can get it cheaper they will atleast match there price I believe all three stores price match. I know SW prices matches only stores and legit adds and sales papers. Nothing on line of course. It looked like cabelas had better shooting and reloading than SW and BPS. Also seems alot funner for the kids which is good and more clothes to choose from, camos. BPS lacked in variety of things like the camos and shooting supplies which is understandable. Hence the name. SW is less for looking and more for buying. HAve a pretty good variey of shooing supplies ann archery gear. A manager at cabelas told me the reason for their store not having some items is because it's just a place to look and bring the family. He said their sales book and online store is where they make their money. Not having items to show or advertise makes no sense. Just my 2 cents. Oh yeah, SW's Binos are so much better than the both. Even the Swaros we get are so much brighter and I hear people increased their deer sightings by over 50% by using binos from SW. Maybe it's a rumor, but I wouldn't chance it. LOL!! I guess the first rumor is true and they are being shipped straight to south eastern AZ. Now thats the Tucson one.
Schmitty Report post Posted August 8, 2007 TAM, I hit Bill's today and he only had 1 can of the regular 7828 in stock, none of the short cut powder. He told me that it would be coming in on his next powder order which is a few weeks out. Did you find any in the valley? thanks, Schmitty
TAM Report post Posted August 8, 2007 Thanks Schmitty! I'll have to stop in Bills place sometime. It will be nice to have a local source for my powder. I was able to get a can of the ssc down at SW in Mesa, but I've got 4 rifle hunts coming up this fall so I'm sure I'll burn through this can in no time and need another. I think Prescott could sure use a Sportsmans Warehouse!
MattM Report post Posted August 8, 2007 My lady works at BPS and they price match anyone. I went in with a Midway USA mail flyer and they matched the prices on my Sierra bullets. I also went in with a printout from an internet add and they matched that. Sometimes their stock is lacking but all in all not too bad. She also gets a pretty good discount on their redhead and other BPS owned items. She is all camoed for the upcoming season too. As far as tax...if we order it online or from a catalog we have to pay shipping so to me it works out the same plus there is no waiting for BBT.

Schmitty Report post Posted August 11, 2007 . I think Prescott could sure use a Sportsmans Warehouse! Well TAM, it looks like you are going to get your wish. While I was down picking up a can of 7828ssc at the SW in north Phoenix the kid at the optics counter told me that construction had proceeded on a Sportsman's warehouse in Prescott Valley and that it should be open in early spring of 2008. I'll see what I can dig up on the rumor. take care, Schmitty
