New hunting Truck

Recommended Posts

I have 03 f-350 4x4 with the V10 & 6" lift 35" tires. Love the truck, HATE the gas mileage also it rides like a tank.

I will run this truck until the motor blows than put a new motor in & do it all over again!!! Fords are great trucks IMO!!!

Do as suggested above & bomb proof that 6.0 and you will have an awesome rig!!

Oh boy!

The 6.0L, I'm so sorry.

Hopefully yours is better than mine was.

I dumped mine after sinking 11k in it and said, enough.

I went back to an expedition....best move I ever made.

I have an 05 6.0 and I have had it for years! A couple of easy upgrades that haven't been mentioned is get a blue spring upgrade for your fuel pressure and an external coolant filter. Both are easy to do yourself, plenty of how to's on youtube. Good luck on the draw!

I have an 03 6.0 and have had a few problems, but nothing major other than losing two injectors under warranty. I've gone through a couple FICMs and a couple alternators, but these are easy to replace and fairly inexpensive if you know where to buy them. Look up diesel tech Ron on Youtube for maintenance suggestions. I haven't bulletproofed mine and she still runs great!

Oh, another thumbs up for the blue spring mod. Amazing difference in throttle performance!

any worthwhile mods for better gas performance? guessing that's a no.

Oh man. The 6.0. I've got a 2005 Excursion that we bought around 65K miles. Great truck, took us on so many family outings pulling a very heavy 32' trailer with big slide outs. Little things started going wrong - FICM, HPOP, turbo underboost causing the check engine light to come on under a load, bad cold starts, sluggish warming up.

I could list several $1200 plus trips to the mechanic, and it's now at BulletProof in Mesa looking at another $11K. The list of things that go wrong with this engine are endless. First thing I'd do is take it to BulletProof, ask for Andrew and get a no BS assessment of it.

On a 6.0 the EGR cooler will fail. It isn't an "if" it's when. And the oil cooler is basically a box with radiator wings that cools the oil while also cooling coolant. It clogs and fails, and coolant mixes with oil. The injectors are another trouble spot. If they aren't torqued to spec, even over spec, you get a loose injector that allows unspent fuel to pass through it into the cylinder causing bent valves or even a burned piston.

Bottom line, if it's running great you are in good shape in the short run. But take pre-emptive measures to protect it, because when it fails, it fails BIG TIME. Like a few thousand bucks easy, up into the teens. That's where we are.

would it just be cheaper to buy a bumper to bumper external warranty and what ever breaks they fix...my dad has it for his cummins and he loves it...

Is the truck even worth the $11,000 you're about to dump into it?

If it's running great, and sounds great, that's a bonus. A sick diesel is obvious.

Definitely get it checked out for a once over. If you're up north in phoenix, I'd take it to Strictly Diesel. Down south, try One stop truck shop by the Sky Harbor airport..

More MPG, that's a tuner. But you really wanna make sure the headbolts are done before you do any serious street tunes. Once it gets a clean bill of health, try to get a SCT X4 tuner, and maybe contact one of the specialty tuner shops like Innovative Diesel on their website and they custom do custom tunes dependent on what you've done to your truck. I hear a lot of folks getting 18mpg+ on their street tunes.

I bought my 04 with 70k miles. I put about 1200 in for pulleys and belts so far. Everything else was fine. The dealer added a BP EGR..I'll be getting the headbolts done before I do any serious towing with it. Probably in Feb next year. (It's a 4k job. And while the engine is apart you want to do any work that needs to be done at that point.)... HPOP, Oil Cooler, any leaks, injectors..etc..

The 6.0 is a fantastic machine once a few upgrades are done. But like so many have said prior, it's all about maintenance. Don't put that off. Change all the filters right off the bat and use only Motorcraft filters. And an oil change (Probably 15w-40 Rotella or 5w40- T6). Oh, and once you fill the tank, every tank, use some Diesel Kleen to baby the injectors. Cheap insurance.

This might help explain a little: http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f23/avg-cost-making-6-0l-reliable-bulletproof-292265/

If you have any other questions, just shoot a PM. I'll answer what I can.

And Dieseltechron on youtube is your new best friend.

And watch this:

But don't take it seriously =)
