Backpacking Tripod for sitting and shooting off

Recommended Posts

I was reviewing the previous topic regarding tripods, but I did not want to hijack it.

I see that the the Slik Carbon Fiber Tripod, the Carbon Pro 613 is good and the slik pro mini. The Jim White Head looks great, however it is expensive. The Velbon PH157Q Head looks good, then there is the Outdoorsmans 2-way head, or the Bogen 700RC2 fluid head.

I already have a nice heavier tripod, so I am looking for a lighter one to hold my Swarovski 15s or a spotting scope.

By the way is there a way to modify a tripod to shoot off in the field? Seems like it would be a good idea.

Oh, and can you use the Jim White tripler by itself? Or does it have to be attached to a bino? And will it work on a Leica 8x32?

Thanks

Bill

Don't think I could help you out much but I use my tripod to shoot off of all the time. Not sure what the tripod you are looking at is set up but the long handle that comes out the back of mine, I point that up about 45 degrees and rest my gun between the handle and the base. Not fancy but it sure is a steady rest.

I sell a piece that Jim White makes that provides a nice place to rest your gun on your tripod. Take a look at the last item on the following link. It's called Jimmy's rest and you just screw it onto the plate on your tripod head and it makes a nice platform for your gun. It's lined with a soft material so it won't scratch your gun.

I will go test out the tripler for stand alone use and let you know, but I don't think you would want to do that. I never thought of looking through it that way though.

Thanks, everyone. Amanda, yes, I would imagine that, that tripler is probably is three power setting?

Oh, by the way, does Jim have his own website or are all his products listed here on this site?

No, Jim doesn't currently have his own website, but I am working with him to create one for him. I don't list all his products here on this site. I just chose what I thought was most appropriate for Coues hunters.

Is there something in particular that you are looking for?

I have the Slik Pro Mini with the Outdoorsman head, it's a great setup. The pistol grip swivels straight down to provide a great rest. I never had to move when I found a buck last year. Just my .02

I took a tripler out and looked through it without attaching it to binos and yes you can use it as a stand alone optic. it will only be 3x though. But it has it's own focus and so you can hold it easily since it's lightweight and focus on an object. Looks bright and clear.

And yes, it should work on your 8x32 binos. Buy one and try it out. If you don't like it, you can return it for a refund as long as it remains in excellent condition.

You might have seen me asking about different tripods on a different thread.... this is my new set up that I just finished putting together today. It is a Velbon Sherpa Tripod, Jim White Panning Attachment, and an Outdoorsman head. They have a detachable rifle rest that you can buy with the Outdoorsman equipment, but I prefir the Polecat Tripod for shooting.

Hey Gyys:

Just so you will know, the OUTDOORSMAN pistol grip head has a shallow groove on the side that is designed to be used as a rifle rest. All you need to do is, remove your optics, turn the head 90% and you will see the rifle rest groove.

Good Hunting

Jim White.
