Great geology in AZ

Recommended Posts

My son is taking a ton of interest in geology (he's 6), and he has been wanting to get out and search for all the rocks where AZ is known to have them. I heard that there are more meteorites are found in AZ than any other state.

Anyone have pics of cool stones they've found in their travels?

I always run into something interesting around payson. I have found 50lb quartz crystals in certain areas. Also like going to the closed down mines around prescott. Interesting stuff for sure.

One reason AZ has so many meteorites is our arid climate. Most meteorites are iron, iron rusts away. Best place to find some is in Franconia, AZ using a metal detector.

No pic's but I've been picking up cool looking rocks for years! I just checked out a book at the library called "Gem Trails of Arizona", by James Mitchell. It's got lots of good info and maps to gem rich areas. You might want to check it out.

Many years ago there used to be a place near Globe where people could pay a fee and dig apache tears (black obsidian stones).

Googling "apache tear stones" will bring up several photos and lots of information that you could show and read to your son.

I don't know if the place still is open to the public, but if I were six years old and interested in rocks I'd love to take my little bucket and tiny shovel and spend an hour or so digging there.

Amanda may know more about the place.

A friend of mine who passed away a couple years back was a real rock hound. He had found huge veins of turquoise, all kinds of neat rocks. I'll see if I can find some of his tumbled stones and post pix.

Used to go there as a kid. We polished them all up and made jewelry. Poor Mom got a lot of tacky obsidian jewelry for years!

That's funny Wink!

My granddad had a rock tumbler. We had so many Apache Tears and geodes they were placed in rock gardens and made great slingshot ammo, too.
