trophyhunter Report post Posted August 2, 2007 Been looking around trying to find a thread comparing these two, but just found little talk here and there. Wanting to buy one or the other and wanted a few more opinions comparing these two. I have the 15's and need a pair for free handing close range. I mostly hunt the desert, oaks, junipers and stuff but occasionally I'll head to the high country searching for that monster buck to stick with my bow, Pines. If I can remember the 8.5's are a tad larger in size than the 10's. Also is there much of a yardage difference in the two. Say I'm looking at a ridge 300 yards out. Will the tens be that much better? And, in the pines I'm sure the 8.5's will be better, but can imagine 10's would be fine as well. Never owned or used a pair of tens before. Been using my trusty swaro 15's for everything, even huntin out my of my tree stand. Any recommendations would be helpfull. Pros and Cons.
Diamondbackaz Report post Posted August 2, 2007 This might help though they don't list the ELs http://www.birds.cornell.edu/publications/.../binotable.html
peloncillo Report post Posted August 2, 2007 I LOVE my 8.5 ELs !!! Keven
TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted August 2, 2007 8.5-brighter, larger field of view, more stable. lighter, less expensive. The 10's would be fine too, but why pay the extra money when 8.5's are better?
Ron G. Report post Posted August 2, 2007 I know this wasn't listed in your options, but it may be something to consider... Have you looked at the Leica Geovids? Either 10x or 8x? After I got my 15's, I realized what 'nice' glass was and after doing research to upgrade my around the neck binos I decided on the geovids. It took me a while to decide on 8x or 10x, and to be truthful, the jury is still out. I haven't owned them long enough to know if I decided wrong in choosing the 8x. So far I am very happy with them. I went from 10x Nikon Monarchs. I had trouble holding the monarchs steady when glassing free hand for more than a few seconds. Not sure if it was due to them being so light or what. I often felt like I was looking, but not seeing with them. I haven't had that feeling yet with my 8x leicas, but then again I haven't really looked at a nice bull or buck with them yet, and I'm sure I'd be shaking anyways when I get a nice one in my field of view... The leicas are heavier (and bulkier?) I believe than the el's, but the leicas are about the same weight as my 10x monarchs and small bushnell rangefinder combined. With the geovids, the range finder is built in, and works great out to 1200 yds. So far I haven't missed the extra 2x, but only time will tell. Most times I will need the extra power I will have my 15's with me. There have been plenty of times that 15x hasn't been enough. In comparing my 10x monarchs to my 8x leicas, I feel like I see more (or better) with the leicas. Not sure if it is due to the better clarity of the leicas, or wider field of view. Anyways, I hope at least the discussion about 8x vs 10x helps you some... Whatever you do make sure to get your hands on whatever pair you are considering and look through them. Good luck and hope you don't mind me mentioning a 3rd pair if you are really set on the el's... Ron
El Fuego Report post Posted August 3, 2007 I picked up the 10x32 EL which was a decision based on similar conditions and requirements that you have. They cannot be beat. Best of luck to you.
jnobleinaz Report post Posted August 3, 2007 My advice would be for around the neck binos check out the leupold pinnacle's. I have the 8x42's and they are great. the eyecups block out the light. They are very clear and crisp and only 500 bucks. I looked at through a ton of binos before I got these. I feel unless you are staring through them for hours the good middle of the road ones work great. Especially for 8x. I will sit and knee glass with these and have great results. So anyway if you are not using a tripod these are great but everyone has a different view. Whatever fits you the best.
COOSEFAN Report post Posted August 3, 2007 NO BRAINER....although you do have some great ideas here from everyone else! If you already have the 15's.......you don't need the 10's! If you have the money......buy the 8.5x42 EL's........you will never regret it and you will never need to buy another pair of binos with that set up! I have the 8.5 EL's and had Outdoorsmans install a nipple on em' so they work with the same adapter as my 15's. I would definitely go this route instead of buying the Swaro EL adapter....the Swaro adapter is flimsy and easily broken with one drop on a rock! The 8.5's and the 15's together cover all the distances in effective glassing and is a deadly combo Jimbo's $.
peloncillo Report post Posted August 3, 2007 Yeah Jimbo I got that same set up and love it. Keven
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 3, 2007 Cade, like I told you when we were talking at Sportsmans Warehouse, I would go for the 8.5's.
azryan Report post Posted August 3, 2007 the 8.5's are bomb go with those they are a tad bigger then the 10's but they are a little brighter and have a wider field of view...which i personally like....either way you cant go wrong...come buy them from me ...im actually not joking...you can help me get my free pair

monstercoues Report post Posted August 3, 2007 If you are going to spend that much money on a pair of binos, you might as well get the 10X42's.
trophyhunter Report post Posted August 3, 2007 Thanks for the comments fellas. I got my eyes set on the swaros. But yeah, the monarchs and the pinnacles are both great glass. Thought about the leicas, but man I love my swaros. Right know I am leaning towards the 8.5's, but still keep looking at the 10's. Like firstcoueswas80 said I work a sportsmans in Tucson so I get the pleasure of looking and comparing binos all day since I work in binos dept. I too have the whole outdoorsmans set up so it would be nice to put their nipple on the 8.5's and be able to use both on the tripod. It sounds like the majority of you guys prefer the 8.5's. Brighter is always better and they would probably be a tad better in the pines. Thanks for the offer downthebarrel17. It would really make no sence to buy them from you now would it! LOL. Firstcoues it's with a K dang it. heck, atleast you memberd huh. Thanks for the info guys and any more could only help.
