mbiewer Report post Posted February 17, 2016 Well after a long weekend... and a long week of admitting defeat and cleaning gear, and "what's that smell" from the dry box; I was just curious if anyone one that had my same unit, had any success. Thanks to my new and good friend (and fellow CWT member) Edge, We camped in an area that we probably would have avoided ordinarily. We camped closer to Lake Pleasant. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't the intermittent drone of weekenders or offroaders that interrupted our serenity. We got the donkeys in all hours of the night to thank for that. ha ha. One even managed to come into the middle of camp, and kick over a couple of dry boxes. We seen plenty of sign, and plenty of sign to everything else (like mountain lion), but just couldn't come across them. We ran a staggered camp. 3 of us went up for the first 4 days, then my brother and I stayed an extra night till Tuesday. One of our group came out Monday and stayed till Saturday. (the perk of the extra time on the HAM hunt). Tim and his sidekick did work their way up to around bumble bee, and said they seen lots more sign over there. but they were unsuccessful nevertheless. Luckily we squeaked our elk app in before hitting the road for javelin camp. Cows straight across in all 5 slots, but October is a long time away, and it's still a draw. My girlfriend asked the other day for the dates for spring turkey, that's when I got all teary eyed and said we didn't get drawn for that either... C'mon dove season...!
218buck Report post Posted February 18, 2016 We hunted the same unit there was 4 of us that drew on the same app I donated my tag to the AZ elk society and the wounded warrior that got my tag shot a pig with his bow near Cleator my daughter tried it with a bow this year and managed to get 3 shots all under 20 yards all clean misses. The other two guys both missed multiple shots with there muzzle loaders. One of the herds had 20 one was over 25 one of the herds was only a mile from the lake. Try it again next year
mbiewer Report post Posted February 22, 2016 Oh man oh man... Assuming its the same incident, your fellas made an old timer really mad. Friday morning, we just got back to camp from our opening day walk about. We had two old timers in a side by side come into camp to see if we were hunting, swap info, and say hi. One guy had a tag, one guy was out to help. fast forward to Tuesday. My brother and I were packing up and Tim and his step son were just getting started (we went out Monday night, and Tuesday morning). The guy on the SxS stopped back in. Said he was all set up on a herd of about 20 with his bow, started to draw up...and had someone shoot and scatter the herd from a ways off. Now- I'm assuming it is the same area, just north of the lake... and the follies of the H.A.M. hunt in general. our first venture into 20b was on the west end of castle hot springs rd. The rancher helped us out and tipped us off about a herd he seen earlier in the morning (see they're not all bad, lol). Really think that was by chance that we found them though. This year we covered new ground after getting some sage advice from Edge. Seen lots of good sign, but never crossed paths. Tim and his step son showed up Monday and left Saturday. one of the days they went up north by bumble bee and said the sign was a lot thicker up that way. Oh well, maybe next year.
