hassled by border patrol

Recommended Posts

when i was down south scouting this last week for my deer hunt i was carrying a glock in a belt holster for obvious reasons with illegals and smugglers. when i was up on the mountain glassing i heard a vehicle stop by where mine was parked but they were out of view, i assumed it was border patrol. no issue. after awhile i hiked back to the truck and drove down the road a bit just to glass from a different angle, border patrol drove by.. waived at me, no issue. as i was leaving at dark, 2 border patrol agents waited for me to leave, then haul butt down the mountain to get in behind me, i pulled over without them turning there lights on. right away (whom i assuming was the superior officer) told me to keep my hands where he could see them. he walked up to the truck, asked me what i was doing out here, politely told him i was deer scouting, he asked if he could search my truck! i said no sir you can't. this pissed him off a bit, he then asked me if i had any weapons in the car, i told him yes i did. this triggered him, he told me to get out of my truck and produce identification. then he asked about the glock case that was in the backseat (which i figured he had been that vehicle stop by my truck earlier and looked inside the windows). i told him it was mine and that i had been carrying it incase of a self defense situation. all the while being a complete butt, he drilled me about if he were to run the serial numbers would it come back stolen.. i told him no, go ahead. he took the offer and went back to his truck to do so. the other 2 bp agents were nice and talking about hunting with me while the other guy was flexing his nuts back at the truck running the numbers. he came back and told me i was lucky and then proceded to tell me that i may have been lucky that other bp guys are more relaxed when it comes to carrying a sidearm but that he isn't. he then stated that i was only 19 and not even legally able to carry a handgun. i told him, no sir you have to be 21 to have it concealed or buy ammo, but only 18 to open carry. he interupted me and told me to shut up and listen to him. then he went on about how i wasnt being legal because the gun was in the case in my truck when i was leaving? ( not loaded, nor stowed in the case with ammo) i was fuming by this point but bit my tongue. after he continued to show his superiorness to the other officers he said i could go. i wish i would have gotten his name, what a complete butt.

you'd think they had better things to do then hassle two 19 year olds.

I hear ya... I had the same thing happen in regards of an office showing how superior he was... I was 17 and out in buckeye and just happened to cross a street on my dirt bike... There were 3 different cars with six cops that Came up in front of me and stopped me. You would of thought they had something better to do... While the "Head Hancho" was chewing me out, the other officers were just standing there like they didnt know what to do after he went back to his squad car the others were apologizing for his actions.. never understood it, but he did give me a ticket with fines up to $1200.......Aparently the Judge didnt understand it either and threw it out of court...

That sucks.... Did he ever ask if you about your citizenship? Seems like that would be what he should have been doing... Once that is determine the line of questioning needs to stop unless they have suspicion that you are hiding something...

Its sad when some people get a little authority they turn into complete jerks. I am greatful that there are those out there in that line of work, working for the public and not just for the power.

he's probably the same jerk that couldn't catch all them guys climbing out of the van on the video that was on here awhile back. while he was hasslin' a born in the USA resident there probably about 19 illegals snuck in behind him. too dang bad when a tax payer gets hassled worse than criminals. I had an experience like that at a road block coming back from a days fishing at parker canyon lake, cocky, arrogant guys giving me the third degree. They searched underneath my truck with mirrors and then asked where the fish I caught where at, I told him they were all small so I threw them back but told him he was welcome to smell my hands if he wanted to.

last year on my return from hunting 30B I was stopped at a road block on Sonoita highway and the guy had the dog sniff my truck and trailer but I told him that Ihad a dead javelina in the back just in case the dog freaked out, but he just laughed and waived me thru?

You never know what you will encounter with some of those guys, some are good guys and some are jerks.

I have had great luck with BP guys.

I had a dog hit on my truck one day when it was windy... had my 7 or 8 year old brother ( dont recall how hold he was then, prolly 8 or 9, hes 11 now) with me and my dad had my 30-06 in his lap. guys were nice, complimented my rifle, they even check out the scope. they were talking to my brother really nicely, one guy was asking him about the binos he was carrying and how come they were half his size ( hes not like my dad and i, and he had my dads docters)

got stopped two times on the way back from my lion/pig hunt. both times guys were real nice. too bad to hear you had a jack @$$ of a guy

If scott had been in the field i would ASSUME it was him, but i know hes not :D

Just kiddin Scott!

I haven't "been in the field" for over a year now.. .plain clothes and unmarked trucks are the only way to go...

sorry to hear about your incident. But, its just like anywhere else in life.. you'll find an ahole under every rock if you look hard enough.. Especially in any LE type profession.. I know, I gotta work with them everyday.

That's really too bad, cause I'm sure he was just doing his job... I had an experience like that last October during a 30B muley hunt with my uncle. I was unarmed but my uncle had an "odd six" on board. Had two agents point their AR15's at us  . Not fun but I gotta feel for them because they are in a heck of a spot... dang drug runners have got it all screwed up. BTW, I'm not your typical drug running Mexican but I must of fit the profile: mexican male, carrying a $200+ Badlands pack with hydration system and in hunt'n camo. Dang!!! Gotta be tough but later I talked to another agent in the same area and he apologized for the other agent's actions. In fact when I told him what had taken place six mile up the road he was pissed. I found it best to just follow directions and keep my mouth shut, I don't want to get killed over a misunderstanding <_< . Put yer self in their positions... after a long day at the office I want to come home to the wife and kids safe and I'm sure they do too. Not making excuses but like all others there can be a bad apple in every bunch. Sorry for your experience.

E

Bad day at the office or not. There's absolutley no excuse for that behavior. Attitude determines response on both sides.

Thats too bad that you had to experience that. I'm a supervisor for an agency here in the valley and have seen my far share of badge heavy cops. For the most part they are newer cops that either got picked on growing up or feel they have something to prove.

They have searched my truck a bunch of times. They always ask and i tell them yes search away. There job is tuff and how else do they bust the bad guys unless they search the trucks crossing the desert. He should have been more kind to you once he relized he was not dealling with some criminal.
