Lee's Ferry Advice

Recommended Posts

Where the Paria flows in is a good place to start.

I would agree with this and if you only have a few hours to fish you could spend most of it fishing runs above the confluence. There is a parking pullout at the confluence but be aware sometimes the bank immediately below the Paria confluence is treacherous, I have gone almost knee deep in the soft bank before, and it can be sticky.

Make sure you have good waders because the water is cold and before you venture out even to water mid calf, cast from the bank, fish will often hold 5-6' or closer from the bank. I'd use a double nymph rig under an indicator or a big dry fly as an indicator with a nymph below. As said most small zebra midges will work along with a san juan worm.

If you can make a day of it I'd suggest a guide over renting a boat. I've done both (and fished the walk in a several times too) and when everything is said and done the boat rental isn't as good of a deal as a guide.

Have fun!

Check with the day tours during the summer if you have a canoe/kayak they will take you as far up as you want for a small fee for a small fee not more than 50 dollars. and you can float down camp along the way. Also there are a few walk in spots below the ferry that produce also. There is Cathedral Wash a short 45 min hike and then Jackass a longer hike but well worth it. Fish numbers are low right now nowhere near where they were back in 2011 but there are still monsters to be caught.

Thanks for all of the input, guys, especially those of you who pm'd me! My wife gently reminded me that we are leaving very early that Saturday morning for a 3-day weekend and being gone all day Friday wouldn't be prudent. We've also started discussions for getting our own boat. The Ferry will have to wait for now, but I plan to hit it this summer one way or another!

Guide

Silver Creek is a good 2nd choice

I love Silver Creek and really need to get back there. Unfortunately, that's not an easy day trip from Flagstaff, especially with the limited time we now have that day. Thanks for reminding me of Silver Creek!
