Okbow87 Report post Posted February 1, 2016 Hey everybody! Just wanted to introduce myself a bit. My name is Colin, 28 year old career firefighter here in Oklahoma. I have been tossing around the idea of starting to build some points in AZ and all my research on units keeps leading me here. So I decided I better sign up and try to contribute to the forum some. I am mostly interested in building points and hunting elk on late season rifle hunts or easier to draw early archery hunts. Also coues deer rifle hunts as frequent as possible. I have never had the pleasure of hunting them, but those little deer really have my attention. I don't think I have the patience to wait for any glory elk units or antelope tags. I am interested to see how the new draw process affects the draw odds. I'm hoping some of the elk hunts I have my eye on will drop a point or two. As difficult as Wyoming is to understand, Arizona is even more difficult for me. As far as I can tell there is no way to find out exactly what tags where drawn with what points by non residents? I hunt Oklahoma and Wyoming pretty much every year. Most of my time in Wyoming is spent guiding for a friends family outfitting business, but do hunt away from there on my own. Also have hunted public in western Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. And I have one trip to Kodiak Island under my belt after last September. Custom rifles and shooting is my main hobby away from hunting. Our local rifle club has monthly steel matches here in OK all over the state. I also try to shoot in one or two of the bigger PRS matches a year. Looking forward to being a member here!

DesertBull Report post Posted February 1, 2016 Hunterstrailhead.com is a good place to start getting an understanding of the point structure for various elk hunts and the points it takes to have a realistic shot at a tag. The new point structure is to your (a hunter few or zero points) advantage and to the disadvantage of those who have a lot of points. You picked a good time to get in. rossislider Report post Posted February 1, 2016 As a non-resident, I would estimate most of the late rifle elk huts will probably take you 8-10 points to draw for max points. With the new rules, you now have a chance, a slim chance, but a chance to be drawn with few to no points. In the past you really didn't have any chance of being drawn without max points. Welcome and good luck!
rossislider Report post Posted February 1, 2016 Also, I suggest downloading some of the most recent podcast from Jay Scott Outdoors. They talked a lot about the draw and the new rule changes.
Okbow87 Report post Posted February 1, 2016 The elk hunts I have my eye on are units 5b and 6a late rifle. Hoping with the new rules I can get a tag with more like 4-6 points. That may be a pipe dream though. Going to get a point only for deer this year, and then try to draw something like the 24a late November coues hunt next year. It looks like I could have a chance at it this year, but my first kiddo was just born 4 weeks ago. Not sure how much I want to be gone from home next fall, and already have a fairly full plate as long as my draws that should be sure things don't change. MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted February 1, 2016 If you are starting from zero I would say go for a high draw odds late archery and hook up with one of us locals who don't draw to help you out. You will get a feel for az and some of the country. Latest jay Scott podcasts are all about az draw as well but not much about late archery. Welcome and good luck. If you don't mind I would like to talk offline about western Kansas deer hunt info sometime.

lancetkenyon Report post Posted February 1, 2016 Sounds like you will fit right in here, as long as you don't mind watching a soap opera or three. Shooting, hunting and kids? You have my attention. Welcome. Just wait until your kid gets into shooting and hunting. Then the good times really begin.
