Swivelhead Report post Posted February 1, 2016 You have not revealed what you'll be mounting on said tripod. Spotters definitely require a firm mount, especially in the wind. Binoculars are less affected by wind due to lower magnification. IMO, the only advantage carbon has over aluminum is sound, i.e. "ding" of objects hitting the legs. As a previous poster suggested, do an extensive search for tripod legs & heads @ BH Photo or Adorama. Get educated as to whats out there in your price range. The place to spend extra $$ is on the pan head (2-way video fluid is my preference). Average tripod legs with a great pan head are way better than excellent tripod legs with a lousy pan head. It's tempting to get a combo unit with legs & pan head. My experience is the pan head is substandard on most combo's.
808 Report post Posted February 3, 2016 You have not revealed what you'll be mounting on said tripod. Exactly. I'm jus gonna throw out my $0.02 here. I'm a noob hunter but avid shooter. I don't have a spotter yet but judging by the terrain in the unit I got drawn for javey in, I couldn't guarantee if I'd get a prone shot, so I picked up a Bog Pod. Practiced shooting off it sitting n kneeling so far n luv it. When I go scouting, I take it with me n prop my binos on it, saves my shoulders, n to be honest it's probly the best investment I've made in a while. Seriously. Once I do decide on a spotter, I can pick up the attachment for that too. Plus when the terrain calls for it, I can use it as a walking stick. Boom, 3 birds, one stone, stick, wtfe. Hope that helps, good luck
