tripod recommendations

Recommended Posts

Any recommendations for a tripod? I'm currently looking at the Vortex high country, Slik sprint pro, and manfrotto compact tripod.

I have a carbon fiber manfrotto compacts to fit in my pack and is tall enough to glass standing

Promaster Carbon for sure. I didn't really think it was necessary until I got one. What a big difference.

If you spend most of your time glassing a little extra weight is a small price to pay for rock steady glassing. Manfrotto carbon and head is my setup...and I just added a tripod bag which attaches to legs and allows me to put a large rock in it to pull it down even more

I would consider a 4 or 5 section tripod over a 3 section as it will pack smaller. If you are getting one to stand behind, get one with the necessary height without having to use the center column, as the extended center column is a good source of vibration. I would go to a good photo website like B&H or Adorama and do a search for tripod legs with your different specs. Pair it with a good 2-way fluid video head.

I won't give you my opinion. I've wasted so much money looking for the right tripod. :(

Manfrotto carbon fiber here too. With a 2 way pan head. I have a ball grip too, but the pan head is so much easier for grid covering a hillside or 5.

I actually carry my tripod with legs extended quite a bit for quick set up when hiking. It is plenty tall to stand behind. But when going point A to B, I can still easily carry it on the pack to free up my hands. It can be used sitting on the ground, sitting on a stump or stool, or standing upright very easily.

Procarbon 328 fiber carbon

Their 325 is pretty good but the 328 is better

The 3-section legs are 28mm diameter vs 25mm diameter

I was in the same spot as you a few years ago and ended up going with the slik. It has served it purpose, and done so remarkably well given its price point, but definitely has its shortfalls. Using the center post to extend up to glass standing is doable, but quite unstable. Everything that others have said is spot on; get one tall enough to stand, more segments for collapsibility, a way to weight down a lighter tripod is awesome in heavy winds, etc.

With that said, I've been looking at upgrading to a nice carbon fiber tripod this year. But I'm focusing on researching heads at the moment. If your budget can afford it, hold out for a higher end tripod.
