Which Archery Hunt

Alright, I am just curious. I have a few elk points and am looking to burn them this year. I should have enough to draw any of the following hunts, I have my own ideas but am always interested in what others think. All are early archery.

 

- 3B

- 4A

- 5A

- 5BN

- 5BS

- 6A

- 7E

- 7W

- 8

- 10

- 22

- 27

How far out are you from a 3c tag? If you're within a few years you might wanna hold out. 3c surprised me this last year. 27 has some good Bulls but a lot of guys struggled up there this year. I personally don't think 27 is all its cracked up to be.

Personal opinion wait it out. Go all out this year for a 23 tag or 9 tag or something and maybe get lucky. If not have a 3c tag next year. BUT I just remembered the 27 archery hunt is later this year so if you decide you have to hunt this year that may make the difference compared to last year.

I just read a thread that said someone had a gun pulled on them in 3b. Cross that one off the list, not the experience I am looking for.

Take a look at the past hunt history in 4a. Reduced number of late tags and no early rifle or muzzleloader hunts for many years. I would also include 4b and like 5bs from your list. They've been hammering 27 and 10 hard for the past few years. Still big Bulls in these units for sure, but not the hunt I'm looking for right now.

Looks to be about 11 for a resident. 13 for NR

Fine then! I'll take my 9 points elsewhere! Lol. Unit 10 has great genetics and some great Bulls but I spent several weeks up there this year and saw maybe 3 Bulls above 350. Not too shabby for sure, but older age class Bulls are hardly tripping over each other. I mean they put 100 early rifle bull tags in 10 in 2015! Insanity I say. I am a true believer that there are big elk that die of old age in many of the overlooked mid-tier units. So I look for trends in tag numbers that could result in an increased age class.

theres probably a 400 in every unit. my dad knows elk really good and he said he saw one of the biggest bulls of his life in 4b way up north. idk if id rather have a 4b over 10 though or 27. any early elk hunt is a good one for the most part.

Right now with everything going on, I'd take it over 10 for sure. Honestly I don't have any personal knowledge of 27, so I really can't speak too much to that. I have just heard talk from others who regularly hint 1 and 27 that 27 hasn't faired nearly as well as 1. I would love the later season though.

Correctly stated that a good % of the biggest bulls in Unit #27 have been harvested since the 2011 Wallow Fire which changed many dynamics. Additionally, the herd size is about 50% of what it was at the peak about 15 years ago. Saw lots of cow tracks in the snow last weekend though. If you put in and draw a 27 tag, and the snow all melts by next September.........my recommendation is to contact Becker...... as he seems to be the only one that knows anything about the unit
