Outdoor Writer Report post Posted July 30, 2007 Steve, Long in the tooth and vintage go well together. I think I was 25 when that photo was taken in 1965. I'll let you do the math. -TONY

AZbowhntr Report post Posted August 1, 2007 Here is another picture of one of the bucks that Duwanes camp took. This buck has incredible mass. I took this picture while Gary was caping it out a little later in the morning. I did Duwane's map service and would do it again. It was worth every penny that I spent. Here is also a picture of the buck that I ended up taking. I had the early west side tag. I took this buck after passing several earlier in the hunt that was bigger. I just started running out of time.

markmach Report post Posted October 1, 2007 There is a good book Kaibab North American Deer Herd with both East and West side. I hunted antlerless there a couple years near Tater Ridge and saw some NNNIIICCCEE bucks! I believe Guide Duane Adams has a book or video of the Kaibab? Have a great hunt. Mark Well I got my first ever Kaibab tag this year, after 7 years of trying for it. It is the Early 12-A East hunt. I have heard that I am supposed to start praying for snow every day until my hunt starts. I have never been up there before, so I don't have a clue about where to start. I will be up there on Oct 13- for my brothers first ever turkey tag, so I'll get to look it over a little bit. I have been online looking for pointers and tips to hunting the Kaibab, but I think most of that knowledge is pointed towards other units and not specifically my hunt. If anyone could point me in a general direction, Or a good place to start out, I would be most grateful. Thanks.
DUG Report post Posted October 2, 2007 I got Duwane's and Tony's book and there is lots of good stuff in it. I have also ordered maps from Duwane and am awaiting their arrival. We are going up to scout this weekend and learn some areas. My wife and I have the early 12A west hunt. She is not quite as excited about the hunt as I am. TVickers Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Tony, those are some awesome deer, hope I get lucky enogh to even get close to that caliber deer.think Im going to get a hold of Duane for his map services, sounds like more good info....good luck to all who drew,Steve Steve, You guys should do just fine. But by all mean contact Duwane. He's a straight shooter and knows every nook and cranny on the Kaibab. I hunted 12A almost every year during the 1960s and early 70s. Back then, it was first-come, first served on the permits, with an additional $5 charge and no split between the east and west. Also, permits were for ANY deer. The doe in the 2nd pix is one my son killed there when he was 10. Although I've hunted about every area of the plateau at one time or another, the area just up from the Houserock ranch on the Eastside Game Trail was always my favorite. It's also where I killed my largest Kaibab buck in 1965. Below is a scan of an ol' print from back then. -TONY And..on the wall Tony, I love the Old Vintage Photo. It reminds me of great memories as a kid hunting Kiabab with my dad. I remember sitting at Jacobs lake lodge 1980 or so, watching all the hunters come in with Bucks all over their trucks. I remember seeing a horse trailer come in with so many big bucks on top, you could not tell how many deer were up there. Well in my entire life I have only drawn one 12A East late hunt and lucky me it was a blizzard that year. The hunt was rough and cold. I did not get a deer. I continue to put in every year and I hope someday to enjoy a big buck like yours from Kiabab. Until then I will live vicariously through your success. Thanks... Tom Tom, The early Kaibab hunts during the '60s and early '70s were some of the more memorble ones of the almost 50 years or so I have spent hunting big game. The fact my grandad, who was already in 70s, was always along and that my oldest son got his start on those hunts has a lot to do with it. And don't feel bad -- I haven't drawn a Kaibab permit over the last 20 years or more. -TONY You might want to check out the The Good Ol' Days thread, where Pollo Hombre and I talked about this particular hunt.
