Kaibab Hunt Help

[HEADACHE]

Well I got my first ever Kaibab tag this year, after 7 years of trying for it.

It is the Early 12-A East hunt. I have heard that I am supposed to start praying for snow every day until my hunt starts.

 

I have never been up there before, so I don't have a clue about where to start.

 

I will be up there on Oct 13- for my brothers first ever turkey tag, so I'll get to look it over a little bit.

I have been online looking for pointers and tips to hunting the Kaibab, but I think most of that knowledge is pointed towards other units and not specifically my hunt.

 

 

If anyone could point me in a general direction, Or a good place to start out, I would be most grateful.

You dont have to pray for snow on the early hunt. Most of the deer will be up high. They had a huge fire up there and burnt a lot of the east side up. So it ought to be very good in there this year.

congrats on the tag!I got drawn for 12A East early hunt too,is a good tag,snow would be awesome,if there is snow,east side game trail is a good place to start,it traverses most of the unit down in the junipers ,pines..........glass alot,lots of deer in the unit,be patient and dont shoot the first thing you see,if no snow they will be on top,but theres over 270 square mile of unit with only 175 tags ,hope you are as stoked as i am,good luck......

I would look for pockets of unburnt green in the Warm fire area.

Carefully heed what Doug and Deserthunter wrote. I just wrapped up an article for the Nov. issue of Rocky Mt. G&F magazine on three of the four bucks that clients of Duwane Adams killed on the 12A early hunt, two were from the 12AE hunt. Here are all four. -TONY

Headache: I would give Duwane a call and ask him about his map service. I know you probably want to go up and do it all by yourself, but by getting some advice and spots indicated on a map from a man who has guided the Kaibab for 30 years, the gas cost alone you will save is worth the price of the map service. I was on the hunt that the above pictures are from and we saw tons of deer on both the east and west side. I hope you call Duwane and greatly increase your chance of shooting one monster...........520-385-4995.............Allen Taylor..........

The Foster buck grossed 204, the Ziser one -- referenced in your message -- was 200 and Honzalek's was 194. The "small" one at the end was in the 160s. Here's a frontal view of Foster's buck, with guides Frank (center) and Al Lopez (right). Note the cheaters coming off both antlers. -TONY

Hi can anyone tell me more about the map service how much have you done it exct thanks this is great conversation.

We used it last year for our 36b hunt. Duwane gave us some detailed information, but he's not going to say "go to these gps coordinates". It was 250.00 for the map and well worth the investment. Gave us 5 or so spots to 'check out'

Also we took glassing lessons from him last August , it was like 200.00 -250.00 per person. It was a 1/2 day session. It was the best investment ever. Even more than the map service IMO.

You guys should do just fine. But by all mean contact Duwane. He's a straight shooter and knows every nook and cranny on the Kaibab.

 

I hunted 12A almost every year during the 1960s and early 70s. Back then, it was first-come, first served on the permits, with an additional $5 charge and no split between the east and west. Also, permits were for ANY deer. The doe in the 2nd pix is one my son killed there when he was 10.

 

Although I've hunted about every area of the plateau at one time or another, the area just up from the Houserock ranch on the Eastside Game Trail was always my favorite. It's also where I killed my largest Kaibab buck in 1965. Below is a scan of an ol' print from back then. -TONY
