I have the rifle Unit 23 hunt but have never hunted there before. I understand that there is a large number of tags there. I will have my 9 year old daughter and 10 year old niece but we are not road hunters. The kids hike with me.

My questions are where the areas to avoid the concentrations of hunters? Where do most hunters camp and hunt? What areas should I avoid because of this?

If you have some areas you are willing to share feel free to pm me directly. I plan on at least two scouting trips but want to make them count. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have taken 2 pigs there. Both pigs were in the cherry creek area and in washes. There will be other hunters there but it's big country and plenty of room to get away

Speaking of plenty of other hunters I've got the same tag as u, went up to scout north of Roosevelt yesterday, saw about a dozen does, one buck, cattle galore, n a small herd of javeys by mid morning, cool! I went up there again this morning, n besides the 2 does I saw at 1st light, all I saw all day was other hunters one dude parked right on top of me! Another dude was down the way, playing w/ his drone. Freakin unreal! I'm assuming opening day is gonna be 10x worse, so I'm calling that place a bust. Good luck on ur hunt

Theres lots of pigs in 23. There will be alot of people also but tons of country. Just be patient and keep glassing and you will find them.

Sounds good. I am going to try to find the areas with the most hunters and avoid those areas. Lots of country just trying to find best chance of some semblance of solitude with the kids. Sounds like some places in this unit turn into Baghdad with all the gunfire.

I don't know the unit at all but if you find a basin or canyon off the roads that would take a little work to get to you will do fine. Nobody walks far for piggies. My son killed his pig this year a short hike from a main road, it is a basin protected from view by a steep ridge from the road. Nobody hunts it. Always has a big herd there. Funny thing is the surrounding areas get pounded to death with very few shots heard. Also if it stays warm like it is now hunt at sun up we were done opening morn at 8:15. Good luck

4 weekends of scouting, about 1000 miles to n from, going on 5 tanks of fuel, lost track of how many hours glassing, n I FINALLY found um this afternoon. Decent size herd too, 9 adults n 1 juvenile. Watched um for 2hrs n they put on a good show, playing follow the leader, nose to tail rubbing scent on eachother, dog piling, grazing mode, alert mode, you name it. Staying up here 2nite solo, I wanna see what they're gonna do n where they're gonna be in the morning. I know this is jus the tip of the iceberg n it ain't over yet but I wanted to say thx u guys for all ur help so far!!!

Found n watched um again for 2hrs this morning, awesomeness!!! Got up on time, but shoulda payed got a better look at the lay of the land before it got dark last night ugh hiked up the ridge, peaked over the edge just to find another knob obstructing my view, damnit! Backed out, hiked down the drainage between the 2, got up on top, setup n started glassing the opposing hillside, 10mins in n BAM, pigs. Time chk 8:16, yardage chk 528, head count, yah buddy same herd as yesterday. Watched um feed down to 326yds, when they all got covered up, I got ballsy, packed up n snuck down closer, ranged a fatty at 136yds. I'd take that shot, given that same wind n setup again. Let um settle n backed out, packed up camp n came back to Chandler, can't wait to go back up!

Good for you, that's the way to stick with it. 136 yards is a fair poke but I bet you can get closer if need be. Just keep the wind in your face and take your time and you can probably cut that distance in half.

Especially if they are feeding, I have gotten to 10' a couple of times but their hearing is very good and it has been very dry out which makes it worse because most of the morning dew evaporates off by 9:30 ish.

What setup are you shooting?

I'm gonna take my AR chambered in .223/5.56, w/ a Nikon M-223 3-12x42 sitting on top, shooting some Hornady Superformance loaded w/ 55gn GMX lead free all copper projectiles moving at 3250fps. Should be perfect IMO. Before I did my research I was hoping to jus take some reloads w/ some 55gn Z-Max's n shoot um in the medulla like Ol' Dap on Pigman, but from what I understand varmint round won't penetrate as much as they will disintegrate. My watermelon test, confirmed that lolz.

As far as distance goes, n not to be cocky n over confident but I'm extremely comfortable < 200yds. It's zeroed at 100 n below is a 5rd group at 100yds.

Thx for all your input n good luck on ur hunts guys!!!

Thank you all for your help on a new unit. After scouting we settled on a completely different area of the unit than was suggested. We hunted through the heat for two days before taking a couple of javelina just near evening. The girls had a super time! Thank you all for your input. We had a great time. I ended up getting my javelina at extremely close range with the 308. No meat loss at all! Looking forward to hunting there again. Only issue was TONS of hunters and lots of shooting plus tons of guys on atvs running every road or trail possible without ever stopping to actually hunt. Does not bother me at all, never drove a single dirt road or trail entire hunt! :)
