Hoss50 Report post Posted January 18, 2016 I know a lot of guys carry 2 optics with them in the field. I have a set of 8x42 Diamondbacks I carry around my neck. I am still learning and upgrading my items and what I carry. I learned this year I need something with more magnification for longer ranges beside my 8's. I am debating getting a set of 15's for my pack or a spotting scope for my pack. Thoughts, suggestions? I am investing in lower/moderate range hardware for now that I can pass to my son's as they get older and go with me, so honestly I am looking at Vortex 15x56 Vultures & the Diamondback 15x45x60 Spotter. I need a spotter for general range work too so I am kind of leaning that way but I wanted to hear thoughts and opinions. A $1000+ set of bino's or spotter isn't going to happen. That money isn't available right now or soon with the amount of other stuff I need to upgrade/get. I need to upgrade my pack and get a range finder still as well. I have a 4 year old and 1 year old son that will need some gear soon enough though so this stuff will be passed down and maybe later I can get myself some nicer gear. I spotted some deer at probably 1000+ yards this elk season and I was trying to see them better. Even with my buddies set of nicer 10x42 Zeiss bino's I couldn't see much other than deer bodies at that range. That is what is prompting me to want to get something bigger for the pack. I could see animals but couldn't tell jack about them at that range other than they were deer and count them. Harley Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
6ANut Report post Posted January 18, 2016 I picked up a Minox MD 50, I wanted a cheaper end spotter that was small enough for my pack but could also withstand some abuse from being in my pack. PelaPapas Report post Posted January 19, 2016 I carry vortex 10s around my neck in my harness. I used to pack out a 20-60x60mm spotter out with me all the time, but I would get eye fatigue real quick. I decided to try out some 15s, and glad I did, I can glass with those all day. No need for a spotter for myself now. I'm not one to "score" a buck. So if it has antlers (Fork or better), its filling the freezer! I went with a pair of the Vulture 15s. rcdinaz Report post Posted January 20, 2016 I carry 12's now and a big ol 85 spotter if the terrain warrants it. I can pretty much get by with just the 12's but they are swaros, bank breakers. I would look for a spotter like the Minox suggested, good deal and light weight, or maybe the small vortex or gold ring. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I carry 8's and 15's and love it. I wad in a similar situation as you, young family and limited funds and just hunted with garbage poetics for about 4 years. Every birthday and holiday everything I got went towards the bino funds until I could afford what I wanted. I had heard enough from the buy one cry once crowd that it sank in. It doesn't necessarily have to be swaro/leicas to last you forever either. (Mine were swaros and I don't regret it though. ) 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 21, 2016 High quality 10x42s on a good shoulder harness at all times. Used 70% of the time. High quality 15x56 in my pack. Used 30% of the time.
