longshooter Report post Posted July 26, 2007 I got drawn for any antlered deer in 20C. I have a few spots up there that I know hold some decent muleys but I have never seen or heard of any coues in that unit. I was wondering if any one has heard or seen of any coues in this unit ? I don't mind chasing muleys but if there are some decent coues bucks in my unit I would rather chase them.
donniedent Report post Posted July 26, 2007 I'm not sure that they've made it over that far west yet. At that latitude the closest you'll find Coues is 21. I personally believe that it is only a matter of time before coues deer find there way over to the southern part of the Bradshaws and work thier way that direction. I found a whitetail shed in the northern part of the Bradshaws 3 years ago, so I thinks its only a matter of time, unless there are too many lions running around those hills.... which I'm sure there are. I've seen some great coues habitat in 20c though. Donnie
Hunterdan Report post Posted July 26, 2007 Many Years ago there actually was a small herd of Coues in the southern part of the Bradshaws. Game and Fish used to have an antlered whitetail hunt in 20B. I believe it was around 5 tags. That hunt has long went away as well as the coues deer. Over the years I have still heard of occassional sitings of Coues Deer in 20B and 20C. But I would not count on seeing one.

How interesting. I sure don't remember that. 20 years ago the G&F had very little info on Unit 21 let alone 20B to have a Coues hunt there.
Big Browns Report post Posted July 26, 2007 Yes there are Coues in 20c. I saw several north west of Yarnell. I only saw 1 Buck, but I saw several does. The Bradshaw's actually have a pretty good Coues population. A friend killed a nice 8 point last year. Good luck.
Outdoor Writer Report post Posted July 26, 2007 The Bradshaw's actually have a pretty good Coues population. Not sure about 20C, but I have seen quite a few Coues in 20B and several in 20A. Most of them were on the east side of the Bradshaws along the road from Bumblebee to Crown King, and a couple were on the road (Senator Highway??) from CK to Prescott. If I recall, the road from CK to Wagoner is the boundary between 20A and 20B. I wouldn't be surprised if Coues have made their way to 20C. As an aside, in 1962 I killed my first mule deer -- a 3x4 buck -- with a .30/30 Marlin 336 Texan just east of Wagoner. Back then, they even had doe permits in many units. My hunting vehicle then was a 1949 Chevy "woodie" wagon! I paid $400 for it, rebuilt the 6-cyl. motor and sold it a few years later for $800. Wish I owned it now because it was in primo shape. -TONY
JayAz Report post Posted July 26, 2007 I have spent several seasons in 20C chasing muleys. Never saw any Coues but Matt Pierce who is/was the unit manager mentioned on several occasions that there were some that hung out in the higher terrain East of Antelope Peak (Just down the hill from Yarnell) Jay
Huntn coues Report post Posted July 26, 2007 I have a friend who has lived in 20-c for 30yrs and we were just talking about this a few weeks ago and he said that he has seen them in 20-b but they have not made the jump to 20-c yet. I also have another friend (and yes C/S and G/H I do have some friends) who's father works a ranch up there and he has never mentioned anything about seeing the Coues. So what does all this mumbo jumbo mean??? Nothing cause there gotta be one lost in there somewhere. BTW Longshooter what hunt do you have the first or second??? Maybe I will see you up there cause I have a couple of tags there myself.

DesertBull Report post Posted July 26, 2007 I love unit 20C. Killed my fist buck there a long time ago. Used to be a ton of muleys in that unit. Population is down like everywhere else, but you can usually find some nice bucks, especially in Jan. I took my son on the Jr hunt there 2 years in a row, a couple years ago, and never saw a buck either time. For some reason, they schedule the JR hunt right after 500 general season tag holders have run the place ragged. Saw about 150 pigs though, no kidding.
